Karen state is in eastern Burma, once a possesion of Japan and it achieved complete emancipation in 1948 the same year that Isrsel declared nationhood on the UK administered land alongside Muslim and Christian Palestinians farther west.
Burma has over 10 ethnic groups such as Karen,Mon, Chin,Indian, Rohingya aside Bangladesh and Chinese. Their are smaller groups in the north alongside Thailand and China.
The language is a cousin of Tibetan.
Armed conflict broke out in 1958 by armed groups with a political leadership who wanted a separate country. Since Burma is the size of Texas, a country based on a large slice of the east would be very large.They are not always heavily armed but camera shots include field bazookas and M 50 a heavy tripod mounted machine gun with extremely large bullets.
Burma has begun to search for, tap and pipe large amounts of natural gastowards other markets;but this has not ended the war.Many Karen people have moved to the eastern Burmese-Thailand border.
In the early 2000's there were many political refugees supervised by the Thailand government, the United Nations and international aid agencies, religious aid.
