The Navajo Hopi governmental areas in the corner of Arizona and New Mexico have experienced a shift in ownership of the coal which is exported to Phoenix, Los Vegas, Tucson, and areas of Southern California

Tribal figures and employees are now mining coal previously done by Peabody Coal.

The reservation has promised to employ local people, fund environmentally friendly energy sources over decades.

There is a long standing dispute between "traditionalists" versus others over "grazing rights", "cattle confiscation", "confiscation of wood cutting tools" and "over exploitation of water" which was rooted in a slurry pipeline overground that has been phased out. These disputed affect about 10,000 tribal citizens and have not been widely reported lately.

Nigeria has an ethnic minority named Ogoni near the coast and Niger River that has suffered violence and deaths at the hands of the Nigerian authorities especially the military who cooperates with Shell Oil and Chevron. The topics surrounding these ethnic area were on a BBC documentary about the Ogoni movement and Ken Saro Wiwa a Television producer, critic of the centarl gov. policies and who was hung in Lagos with others in daylight by the ruling party. Nigerias oil wealth is owned by the government in a arrangement similar to Malaysia's, Mexico's and Saudi Arabia. This is popular but far from successful and can lead to extreme corruption.
