The Great Depression began in 1929 with manipulation of the US Stock Market based in NYC. It led to massive disruptions throughout the nation for many levels of workers, families and towns.
President Franklin Roosevelt was pressured to respond and introduced the national food stamp department as well as the social security bureacracy which initially help only senior citizens then was expanded later to help disabled categories in 50 states later Guam, American samoa, Saipan and Puerto Rico.
