Belated short obituaries to two important activists in Los Angeles history. Elder Freeman and Wayne Pharr were members and leaders of the Black Panther Party in Southern California.

From the Wayne Pharr blog:

Wayne Pharr, former Black Panther who fought the Los Angeles Police in a historic gun battle in 1969, passed away on September 6, 2014 at age 64. After Pharr and his fellow Panthers defended themselves from the long vio…lent attack by the newly formed LAPD SWAT unit, he became a political prisoner who was exonerated of attempted murder and all other serious offenses. Pharr eventually became a successful realtor in Southern California, a subject of the documentary, “41st and Central”, and most recently authored the well received autobiography, Nine Lives of A Black Panther: A Story of Survival.

From the Scott Braley site:

Elder Freeman was a member of the Black Panther party, and has maintained his activism to this day.   He was a founding member of All of Us or None, a national organizing initiative of prisoners, former prisoners, and felons, to combat the many forms of discrimination they face as the result of felony convictions.  Elder’s blood brother and many comrade brothers came together in a tribute to him at East Side Arts Alliance in Oakland.

Anarchists may remember Wayne and Ronald from the 2nd Anarchist Book Fair's panel about the BPP. He was on the panel with Dedon Kamathi, Elder Ronald Freeman, who also passed away recently, Ashanti Alston, and Michael D McCarty and the BRLP.
