Ruth Hull-Richter is reaching out to protect women across America from domestic violence. In her article series, “Dead Women Walking,” she discusses the abuses of the justice system in California and elsewhere. She points out that abused women are more likely to die at the hands of their abusers after they leave than while they are in the relationship being beaten.
Women from the Southland are identifying with Hull-Richter’s criticism that there is no support structure for victims in California. They cannot count on the police, the courts or the government to assist them. She points out that the system actually helps the batterer succeed in stalking and killing his victim.
Author Hull-Richter is herself a victim of a severely abusive relationship. She and other women in her family almost died from the abuse. She rescued her family and is now planning to start a domestic violence program that deals in solutions that allow victims to live in their own homes and restart their careers.
