Black Label Drugs

Now, thanks to the growing media coverage of these harmful drug side-effects, increasing numbers of people suffering from depression, anxiety and eating disorders are turning to safe natural solutions from naturopaths, acupuncturists and even chiropractors.

Black Label Drugs

Thanks to the warnings issued by the Food and Drug Administration, sales of all classes of antidepressants fell $.3 Billion dollars between 2004-2006 (were $13.5 billion in 2006, down from a peak of $13.8 billion in 2004), according to IMS Health, a health-care information company.
Usage of selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac and Zoloft, dropped in 2005 after warnings about side effects -- particularly the risk of suicidal behavior in people aged 25 and under---prompted the Food and Drug Administration to order drug makers to add Black Box Warnings to their packaging in 2004.
As a result, more and more people are turning to safer alternatives rather than putting themselves at risk by taking the easy way out: a “magic pill” that could cause more harm.
Psychiatric "Treatment"
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal highlighted the fact that psychiatry’s modern history has evolved from lobotomies with ice picks and electric shocks, to early antidepressants that caused brain hemorrhaging, to the more modern drugs that have now been documented to cause suicidal ideation.
Natural Safe Alternatives
Now, thanks to the growing media coverage of these harmful drug side-effects, increasing numbers of people suffering from depression, anxiety and eating disorders are turning to safe natural solutions from naturopaths, acupuncturists and even chiropractors.
Most of the practitioners who take this approach understand that “depression” and “anxiety” are not actually “diseases” – they are usually just overt symptoms of underlying physical situations that can be easily corrected with dietary improvements and nutritional supplements and certain lifestyle improvements.
Modern health professionals in this arena understand that the use of powerful drugs like Prozac only cover up symptoms, which then leaves the underlying causes to continue to worsen, and eventually manifest in other ways including more serious medical problems.
Even Harvard Medical School's Department of Continuing Education will have three classes on complementary and alternative medicine in psychiatry over the next year, up from one a year since the class was introduced in 2003. Doctors who have attended the class report that more patients are asking for alternative treatments -- due to the side effects of antidepressants, as well as a lack of response to the medication.
Drug Company Tactics to Keep People Drugged
Due to the growing number of rave reports from patients who are benefiting from non-psychiatric approaches, spokespeople for the American Psychiatric Association are digging in to their well developed playbooks on how to handle what they see as “competition.” Scare techniques, invalidation, and other public utterances meant to drive the public back into their offices are starting to appear in such major publications as the Wall Street Journal.
In a recent article, Philip Muskin, Chief of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry issued the standard line that alternative treatments might sway patients to give up conventional treatments “too quickly.”
Based on the Black Box Warnings issued by the Food And Drug Administration, “too quickly” may not be quickly enough.
Of course, the worst thing anyone on these drugs could do would be to stop taking these drugs on their own. Withdrawal from these can often cause extremely serious problems, and should only be done under competent medical [non-psychiatric] supervision.
With the drug companies targeting 9.5% of the population, or about 20.9 million American adults per year for their potentially toxic wares, it is about time the public was made fully aware that there ARE safe, natural solutions to these problems, and that these should be thoroughly investigated as the first line of defense.
