On May 10th, Jeremy, a student at Verdugo Hills High School, was standing with his classmates at the bus stop after school. A fellow student was smoking a cigarette, and dropped it on the ground to put it out before getting on an approaching bus. A school police officer came up from behind him, pulled his collar and slammed his head so hard into the side of the bus that the window shattered. She continued beating the student while onlookers started shouting and taking cell phone pictures. Jeremy was one of the people taking video with his cell phone. You can see his footage at: The police pepper sprayed and arrested several students, including Jeremy. Every one else was released from juvenile hall on the same day. But, Jeremy, who had just turned 18, has been stuck in County Jail ever since. Among other things, he is facing “lynching” charges, accused of being a part of a crowd that was threatening the police. He could receive years in state prison if L.A. doesn’t come out to support him. His case demonstrates much of what is wrong with the policing of public schools that fast tracks too many youth of color into the state prison.
