Today I hopped aboard an OCTA bus and headed to downtown Santa Ana where I attended the May Day march that assembled at Sasscer Park, a small patch of public space located directly across the street from the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse.

As a community activist, I've organized my share of protests and demonstrations, and I estimate that at least 1,000 people attended this march. There were dozens of moms pushing baby strollers, not to mention hundreds of high school and college students.

The Santa Ana Police, who have a history of overreacting at the sight of protesters, behaved very professionally. They helped stop the flow of traffic and allowed marchers to walk through red lights as they went from one location to another in the downtown area.

This march was organized by a core of intelligent and talented young people who have close ties with the Cultural Center of Mexico, Orange County Dream Team, and other grassroots organizations. They did a great job putting together this action!
