Campaign gets Nastier as it goes to the Finish Line

Los Angeles- With eleven days to the election day in the Philippines, the campaign heats up to the finish in the United States.

- In Los Angeles, the BANTAY PILIPINAS, an election watch dog for the Philippines, held a forum debate last April 21 in Kapistahan Grill in Historic Filipinotown attended by spokespersons of the candidates. The debate was very civil but was heated. More than a hundred people attended the forum.

The Villar camp was represented by Bobby Reyes, Teodoro by muralist Eliseo Art Silva, Eddie Villanueva by union leader Jay Valencia and Linda Cross, Aquino by Atty. Terry Herrera and Binay by Errol Santos. The moderators for the event was Austin Baul and Cheryl Zarate ably assisted by Cory Esguerra, Cilla Esguerra, Emily Chan and Wendy Natividad.

- Last April 23, the Tropang Villar held a fundraiser event in Mayflower Restaurant in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The event that was filled with people was organized by Paul Villlar and others.

- The NoyMAr campaign also held their webcast event fundraiser in San Diego spearheaded by Loida Nicolas Lewis.Their event was also supported by a lot of people.

Nasty Campaign

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the campaign turned to worst with even the kitchen sink virtually being thrown by each others camp.

The Villar group brought up the psychiatric state of Aquino. Aquino counterattacked by exposing Villar’s real estate dealings with the PSE. Senatorial candidate Riza hontiveros is doing the hatchet man’s job of attacking Villar and NP candidates Liza Maza and Satur Ocampo.

Estrada and Enrile joined the fray in attacking Villar’s manipulating the stock market in a vain attempt to stem the tide of a Villar win. Estrada is out to salvage an tainted reputation of corruption and nepotism while in office. As if he did not do the same while he was the president from 1998-2001.

Angry at Surveys

Teodoro and other candidates hit back at the survey firms for showing them as poor losers in the surveys. The candidates question the survey which only shows Villar and Aquino as slugging it out in the survey polls.

Meanwhile in the US, the nastiness of the campaign is confined in the internet and texts from the Philippine Otherwise, people especially Filipino-Americans are still civil insulated from the nasty tradition of Philippine elections.

Many prefer to stand and wait for the results of the Philippine elections. American media ignore it and only the local Fil-Am media covers it. A classic style of “cut and paste journalism”.
