August 15, 1945 : Victory Against Japan, Freedom for Asian Countries

Los Angeles- The Alliance –Philippines (AJLPP) marked today, August 15, a day of freedom.

Fifty four years ago, in August 15, 1945 several Asian countries won their freedom when Japan surrendered on this day. Although the formal surrender came later on September 2, 1945, Asian freedom fighters in Korea, Indo-China and Indonesia was freed and won their independence on August 15, 1945 from the clutches of the Japanese Imperialism.

Korea and Vietnam declared their independence. Days after the Japanese surrender. But they learned their hard lessons when their colonizers reoccupied their country and re-established their control over their nation. For Korea, their country was divided and was made into two republics-one on the north, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea(DPRK) declared on September 9, 1945 and the Republic of South Korea under the US administration and control.

France sent its famed Foreign legion and the Koumintang Armies of China reoccupied Vietnam and the whole of Indo-China in 1945. Still the Republic of Vietnam in the North was declared free on Sept 2, 1945.

The Dutch reoccupied Indonesia. Indonesian nationalist will have to fight a war against the Dutch who were forced to recognized Indonesia’s independence in 1949. The US occupied the Philippines, Japan and parts of its former colonies in the Pacific like Guam.

Imperialism changed their tactics later when they found out that it was costlier to fight their former colonies. Through the use of their puppets they granted their colonies a nominal independence.

The Philippines became a nominal republic in July 4, 1946, followed by India and Indonesia on 1949 while fighting still raged in Vietnam that was divided into two parts like Korea.

A war will be fought in Korea later in the 1950’s that will cost more than five million lives. Another insurgency war will be fought in the Malayan peninsula in the late 1940’s until the 1950’s.

But still the significance of August 15, 1945 will stand out it history. When Asian countries became free.
