Los Angeles—Echo Park Community Coalition (EPCC) calls on all voters in Los Angeles to vote NO on Prop.98.

EPCC cites the survey of LEPA in the central LA for people to vote NO on Prop 98 that will abolish rent control in Los Angeles.

From the survey LEAP staff and volunteers found the following results:

• 97.4 % of residents reported at least one lead risk factor;

• 97.4% of the residents who had all 6 lead risk factor reported that their landlord did give them a notice of the hazards as provided by law:

• 74.7 % of children have NOT been tested for lead poisoning:

• 15.3% of families have children under 8 with no health insurance:

• and 41. 8 % are on Medi-cal.

The conclusions of the survey validated the fact that overwhelming majority of children living in high risk for lead have not been tested for lead poisoning. An overwhelming majority of pre-978 housing in central LA is reported to having conditions being linked to high risk for lead,

LEAP also concluded that there is a strong need for landlords to comply with Title X and other practices to promote lead safety in homes. The people’s CORE LEAP project is funded by the California Endowment

With so much lead contamination and the move to abolish rent control the rent owners are making life harder for the people and will aggravate their problems. The EPCC statement concludes.
