"Does God Exist?" - Devil's Advocate Debate at CSULA

by Humanist Association @ CSULA Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007 at 10:10 PM

Not so much a religious war as a discussion between a former minister who no longer believes in God, and a scientist who argues against a purely materialist view of the universe.

On Wednesday, October 24, the Humanist Association @ Cal State Los Angeles will present a debate titled, "Does God Exist?" (Yes....we admit the title is a bit ambitious.)

The debate will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the 3rd Floor Ballroom of the Golden Eagle Building, in the middle of the campus. Cal State L.A. is located at the junction of the 10 and 710 Freeways.

For information about parking, please see the campus map at

Arguing on the "no" side will be Dan Barker, a former minister who now heads the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Taking the "devil's advocate" position in opposition will be former NASA mission engineer and science fiction writer Jonathan Vos Post. (Full Disclosure: Vos Post is the Secretary of the Humanist Association @ Cal State L.A.)

This debate will apparently not be so much "yes or no" as it will be "no or not-no/maybe". This will make it an Agnostic vs. Atheist debate, which should be just as entertaining and enlightening as an Atheist vs. Faithful debate. The topic of Evolution vs. Intelligent Design should also be prominently presented.
