Manila - BAYAN MUNA militant lawmakers at the House of Representatives are blaming President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the military for the killing of another Bayan Muna leader in Bicol on New Year’s Eve.
News sources today reprted that Rodolfo “Pong” Alvarado,, Bayan Muna Bicol regional chairman and the leftwing party’s 6th nominee in the 2004 elections, was shot dead at his residence in Albay province.
“The AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and GMA’s (President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) death squads are the only ones with the means, motive and opportunity to kill Bayan Muna leaders like Pong,” Bayan Muna Representative Teodoro Casiño said of the assassination of Alvarado.
Casiño and his colleague, Congressman Satur Ocampo, said Alvarado became the highest ranking activist killed under the Arroyo regime.
Casiño believed that Alvarado’s death was “part and parcel of the (Arroyo) regime’s move to cripple our party for the 2007 elections.
But Ocampo gave assurances this attempt by the administration would not succeed.
“We will make sure Bayan Muna wins anew in 2007 polls despite the violence unleashed against us and with Pong and other martyrs as inspiration,” he said.
“People’s will prevail over violence of desperate GMA,” Ocampo added.
