URGENT ACTION ALERT: Military Out Of Our Communities!

by GWS Thursday, Jun. 30, 2005 at 10:03 AM

Please take a few minutes to make two or three phone calls.

The US Navy is scheduled to make a children's presentation at the Arroyo Seco branch of the Los Angeles Public Library (6145 N. Figueroa St. in Highland Park) on Friday, July 1, at 4 pm.

If you don't want the military, with its bloated budget, to use
cash-strapped libraries - in particular, but not only in, communities of color -- as hunting grounds to stalk the next generation of recruits, please call Tom Johnson, the head librarian at the Arroyo Seco Branch, and Eileen Abramson, Head of Children's Services for the Los Angeles Public Library and let them know what you think. You can also leave a message for Celia Riddle,
head of Branch Services for the Los Angeles Public Library (she'll be out of town until July 6, but that's no reason not to let her hear from you.)

Here's the contact information:
Call between 10 am and 8 pm any time between now and Friday afternoon!
Tom Johnson, head librarian at Arroyo Seco: 323-255-0537
Eileen Abramson, head of Children's Services, 213-228-7481
Celia Riddle, head of Branch Services, 213-228-7571

Let's flood the Los Angeles Public Library with calls to let them know we don't want the military targeting the kids who come to use our libraries!

BACKGROUND: Alarmed parents have seen flyers plastered everywhere in their neighborhood advertising an upcoming children's program featuring the US Navy.

Here's what the flyer (bright red, with a picture of an aircraft carrier)
says:
