McArthur Park Woman's Day event

Time made it seem to be a conglomeration of 2 events- earlier it was a "no al la plan Puebla-Panama rally." As the day went on, banners changed and the "Feliz dia de la mujer sign was tied to the post honoring the Poles.

My perception of this event is created by the fact that I witnessed it from my bike to and from Luna Sol Cafe. In the morning, our aztec dancers were doing their thing as i hurried to meet a friend at the cafe. On the way back, I stopped off at the rally at 6ths near the old VFW building. There were chairs out and a band singing en espanol- some sort of play on the lounge song "fever."
It was quite good, a spanish version of "fever" with lyrics changed to deal with the war in Iraq.

People were standing around handing out flyers about the Taco Bell Campaign, actions against the warm. There was also quite a bit of sales- boothes selling zapatismo books and tchachkes.

It was a nice day for the multi-generational gathering. I saw younger kids with punked out hair and the lounge act. I thought about how great this was, a radical neighborhood event with the comfort that the grass and the sunrise to sunset permit allowed. What a great event for the growing radical.

As I said, I only watched for about thirty minutes, so passers-by vere on and off the grass into the event. Perhaps others would describe this day in park differently.

More the power to them, zapatistas, anti-freetraders of the americas. Most of all, all power to the women on this and every other day.
