informational/planning meeting this sunday the 17th at the downbeat cafe (right next to labor fruit, at sunset and alvarado) at 8 pm.
the first ladyfest was held in olympia, washington in august 2000. not only were there great all-women (or mostly women) bands, there were also art shows, spoken word performances, and all other artsy stuff. there were also workshops on all types of DIY skills, including silkscreening,basic auto medchanics and bicyle repair, legal workshop done by someone from the nat'l laywers guild,
pirate radio, self-defense for women, women in the prison system, fat oppression, sex work discussions, welfare and women, racism and privilege panels, trans issues, women in action against the WTO, and much more.
that ladyfest inspired ladyfests all over the country, and the world. ladyfests in 2001 included chicago, nyc, and glasgow,scotland. this year there will be ladyfests in seven cities in the u.s. and one in london and another in paris. (check out www.ladyfest.org )
anyway, so one of those seven cities is L.A.! a whole ton of work is needed to make this a rocking political important festival/conference in L.A.
ladyfest la has potential but really truly needs to show the reality, and hope, of los angeles- by that i mean l.a.'s diversity and its politics.
