WOMEN CROSS THE MOON
Middle Eastern Women Breaking Bread
Women Cross the Moon began after a chance meeting of two women, one Afghan,
one Armenian, as the result of the spirited discussion which then transpired
over coffee.
We call ourselves Women Cross the Moon because the name has a metaphorical
spirit that sparks the imagination. It implies the impossible is possible. It
speaks to the limitless power of our combined forces. It suggests the
incomparable power of women to embrace the situation wholistically, working
for the good of the whole. It is only natural for women, life’s mothers, to
exalt in this capacity, because in our hearts we know that everyone is
someone’s child, and so everyone is, in a sense, one of our children.
Women Cross the Moon came into being at the onset of the American war against
Afghanistan, and because of this a certain amount of focus was on the way in
which the religious affiliations of Christians, Muslims and Jews have been
used to divide us. That is why the symbol we use to represent our
organization is a women’s symbol composed of the cross associated with
Christianity, the crescent moon of Islam, and the six-pointed star of
Judaism.
It is our intention to bring women together to educate, empower, and unite us
across religious and national boundaries that have divided us, and to
eventually grow to reach across the globe to break bread with women around
the world, and to bring bread to women and families in need.
But if we achieve nothing more, we will set as our goal our primary
organizing tool, that of breaking bread and reating an open forum in which
women can learn from one another in an atmosphere of trust, respect and
compassion.
