A furious public packed the only scheduled meeting for water privatization in Greater Vancouver. The clear and well-informed and positions of the public contrasted starkly with the arrogance and naivity of the GVRD directors.
OUTRAGED GREATER VANCOUVER RESIDENTS DENOUNCE GVRD WATER SUPPLY PRIVATIZATION PLANS
The spirit of Quebec City filled the streets of Vancouver and the Firefighters' Hall in Burnaby where the Greater Vancouver Regional government (the GVRD) attempted on June 14, to hold their lone public meeting on plans to privatize control over the operation of a filtration plant for the region's water supply. In spite of the mainstream media refusing to cover this vital issue and to give voice to criticism, the word spread widely over a matter of a mere few days before the meeting.
460 people were allowed to enter the over-flowing hall (392 max., by fire regs - but firefighters were present). Hundreds, however, remained excluded outside; the GVRD got the names of 200 of them to call for a future meeting. Some estimated the total at 1,000. Being a warm evening, those present urged the meeting be held outside to accommodate all. Or that speakers be run out to them in the hallway and outside so they could listen. The GVRD refused. (They clearly wanted to reduce the numbers.)
