POMONA, California - A city council meeting to decide the fate of a proposed waste transfer station in the city's impoverished east end became contentious as various factions interacted at a pre-meeting rally. After a long corporate presentation and an even longer public comment period, the council voted against the vast majority of the community to approve the project. Protest, including some shoving involving police, ensued.

Ralph's, Albertson's and Vons ? the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 135 prepared this list of stores in San Diego County which they represent and which will NOT be involved in the likely upcoming strike. Queer Democrats Oppose Strong-Mayor Proposition (tags)
The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club overwhelmingly opposed continuing San Diego's experiment with strong-mayor government. At their April 22 meeting they voted to oppose Proposition D on the June 8 ballot, which would make strong-mayor permanent, add a ninth seat to the City Councll and raise the threshold to override a mayoral veto of a Council action from a simple majority to two-thirds. City Councilmember Donna Frye led the debate against strong-mayor; having served under both strong-mayor and San Diego's previous city-manager system, she said it's been harder for her as a Councilmember to hold the mayor accountable and get information she needs to make responsible decisions, to the point where she's had to sue the city, or threaten to, to get needed data from the mayor's office.
Queer Democrats Endorse Saldaña, Take No Position on County Term Limits (tags)
The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club endorsed Assemblymember Lori Saldaña for County Supervisor but failed to take a position on whether to impose term limits on the Board of Supervisors. Supporters of the term-limit initiative, being sponsored by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), said the five Republican incumbents on the board are so entrenched only limiting their future terms will get them out. Opponents said that Democrats have historically opposed term limits and if they supported them for the Republican-dominated Board of Supervisors, they'd be perceived as hypocrites the next time they try to ease-them for the Democratic-controlled state legislature.

As of yet, La Sierra / Tyler districts of Riverside are no where near as bad as places like Eastside--where, you absolutely will get jumped for being the wrong color [between brown / black] for even just walking on the wrong side of the street b/c the turfs are so defined. But, if community members, parents, and students do not take direct action soon, we may very well be on our way to such a demise in other parts of Riverside. Race riots have been spreading in this part of town--from the big Castle Park incident on Valentines Day, to the La Sierra High shut downs the following week, and now this incident at Norte Vista which involved HUNDREDS, far more than the 15 students the press enterprise declares were involved. The District position continues to be to SUPRESS discussion about this as a tactic to calm the situation while simultaneously increasing police presence on campuses. Students need a space & opportunity to dialogue about this, come to their own solutions, and even receive trauma counseling for the violence they repeatedly face by simply showing up for school each day.
To mark the one-year Anniversary of the struggle against the war, Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice organized a gathering--The Peace Circle. About one hundred people sang and spoke during two hours about their feeling about the war in Iraq.

Eleven people from the Mar Vista Neighbors for Peace and Justice entered the Vons store in Mar Vista at 2 PM. They filled their cart to the brim, got their groceries bagged, left them and walked away without paying the scabs. Outside 50 strikers from different stores came to support this direct action. Many people at the scene pledged to organize similar actions in the near future.

About 60 people showed up Saturday April 4th at the corner of Mar Vista Park in Mar Vista to protest against the war on Iraq. The turn up was much larger than last week, despite a chilling wind and a temperature of only 51 degrees. A lot of people passing by in their cars showed their support against the war by honking their horns. The Mar Vista weekly Vigil is located at the corner of Palms & Mclaughlin.
