Where's OUR Religious Liberty? (tags)

The recent controversy over whether institutions owned by the Roman Catholic Church should be required to include birth control coverage in the health insurance they offer employees, the attempt in Virginia to require women seeking abortions to submit to medical rape, and the radical Right's reaction to the 9th Circuit appeals court ruling that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional raises the question: why does it seem as if only bigoted Right-wing churches have "religious liberty" in this country? Why are America's officially tolerated spiritual belief systems seemingly limited to those of the Roman Catholics, Mormons and Southern Baptist Convention?

‘8: The Mormon Proposition”: Two Movies in One (tags)

Director Reed Cowan’s film “8: The Mormon Proposition” is really two movies in one. It’s an exposé of the Mormon church’s role in passing California’s same-sex marriage ban, Proposition 8, at the polls in November 2008 and also a stunning tale of how a church that has institutionalized anti-Queer bigotry wreaks its vengeance against hapless Queer youth from Mormon families who, as part of their belief system, feel duty-bound to drive out their Queer kids and abandon them to homelessness, drug use, prostitution or suicide.

The Dark Night or NeoCon Artist: (tags)

One wonders why so many in the media and film industry are in such frenzy over Christopher Nolan’s film “The Dark Night”? Granted the movie is good, and in some ways great, but still the plot is really no more ingenious that what passes for standard fare on Law and Order. So why is it that the Powers-that-Be is such a tizzy? No doubt a fair share has to do with it portending to hold a mirror up to post-9/11 society—with a major theme of how terror can corrupt those that fear and fight terrorism.

Priest Demands “Confession” from Some Obama Voters (tags)

Recently, a RC priest in Modesto, CA, got upset about Catholics voting for the Prez-Elect Barack Obama. He said if they did so because of his pro-abortion position, then they needed to go to Confession before receiving Holy Communion. Didn’t the good padre every hear of the “Separation of Church and State” clause? Also, as a result of the priest-pedophile scandal, many feel it’s the wrongdoers in the RC Church who need to do the confessing.

Muslim-Bashing and the Power of Cartoons (tags)

Back in the late 19th century, the political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, in NYC’s “Harper’s Weekly,” viciously attacked Catholics, the Irish and the Vatican. He crossed the line with those caricatures. The same can be said about the Danish authors of the 12 cartoons vilifying the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the revered founder of Islam. The demonizing was, in effect, an attack on all of the Muslim faithful. The parties responsible should offer an apology.

Fundamentalism's Bloody Homeland for Jews (tags)

I have previously written about this highly embarrassing, and therefore actively covered up, aspect of modern fundamentalism, namely, the movement's substitution of Jews for Christians as the victims of a supposedly future (but actually past) "Great Tribulation." Fundamentalists actively support the State of Israel, despite their belief that by doing so, they are helping to lure millions of Jews into a horrible death: "Holocaust II." They do so for a reason: they expect to escape death personally. This is a powerful incentive.

Faith-based revolt rises against Iraq war (tags)

Local actions set for Dec. 10 NEW YORK – In a full-page ad in The New York Times Dec. 4, Jewish, Muslim and Christian leaders urged President Bush to stop the rush to war against Iraq. “Your church leaders have sought private hearings with you to express their passionate objections: they’ve been denied,” said the text of the ad. “A strong faith-based revolt against war on Iraq is coming together in the first weeks of December.” They were referring to local actions set for Tuesday, Dec. 10 across the nation.
