Woman shot and killed by police officer in her own home/Another victim of police violence (tags)
So many examples of police brutality in the USA. Racist based [against blacks, but also other people of colour], but also white people are victims. Partly racist, partly just trigger happiness, or a combination. A dirty State in a dirtier State, that is the American police. A criminal organisation! This time about a black woman, who is shot and killed by a white cop in her own home. Time for a 'j'accuse. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!

Forrest Church Speaks on God and America in San Diego (tags)
Forrest Church, Unitarian-Universalist minister and son of the late Senator Frank Church (D-Idaho), spoke October 4 at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego on the history of the relationship between church and state in the U.S. His message, surprising in front of a progressive audience, was that religion shouldn't dominate politics but it shouldn't be read out of the public sphere altogether either. Many progressive causes, including the abolition of slavery and the 1960's civil rights movement, were headed by religious leaders.
Constitutional crisis over FBI raid on US congressman (tags)
The conflict between the US Congress and the Bush administration over the FBI raid on US Representative William Jefferson’s congressional office has rapidly escalated into a constitutional crisis. The episode highlights the contempt with which the Bush administration views such fundamental issues as the separation of powers and the autonomy of the legislative branch. It also reveals the atmosphere of crisis and tension which pervades the American political system.
FBI stages unprecedented raid on congressman’s office (tags)
The FBI conducted a search of the office of Louisiana Representative William Jefferson over the weekend in what is the first such intrusion by an agency of the executive branch into the office of a sitting congressman in US history. In a press conference on Monday, Jefferson, a Democrat, denounced the raid as an “outrageous intrusion into the separation of powers.” The raid on Jefferson’s office in the Rayburn House Office Building on Saturday night was a politically motivated breach of constitutional boundaries aimed at asserting the power of the executive branch over the legislative. It is yet another political marker in the government’s moves towards dictatorial forms of rule.

The Real Clash of Civilizations: Progressives versus the Neo-Cons (tags)
I have no quarrel with honest, decent conservatives. The essence of conservatism is the preservation of what is best from the past, the unwillingness to change what remains useful or valid just for the sake of change.
Liberals vs. Conservatives? It's the Corruption, Stupid (tags)
"...how about contrasting our noble beginnings to where we stand today? Thomas Jefferson's vision for our nation is imbued with John Locke's interpretation of government of, by and for the people. "Great mistakes in the ruling part, will be borne by the people without mutiny or murmur," Locke wrote. "But if a long train of abuses. . . . all tending the same way, make the design visible to the people . . . it is not to be wondered that they should then rouse themselves, and endeavorto put the rule into such hands which may secure to them the end for which government was at first erected."

As part of an ongoing investigation surrounding a case of vandalism at a Kohl’s clothing store on December 9, 2000, the Jefferson County District Attorney's office established a GRAND JURY and issued subpoenas to a local activist, Doug Bohm, and former Denver Justice and Peace Center staff member, David Martin, to testify. On May 17th Bohm was found in contempt of court and taken into custody for “failing to follow a court order that involved his testimony before a grand jury," said Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County District Attorney's office. Martin is scheduled to appear before the Grand Jury on May 31st.
