May Day Sharpens Struggle for Union Democracy: UAW Leaders Flee Vote Count (tags)
The leadership of UAW Local 2865 - the UC graduate student union - has hijacked the election to retain incumbent power. Halfway through the ballot count, it appeared possible that a slate of reformers, Academic Workers for a Democratic Union, would win the election. At 8 pm April 30, the incumbent-controlled election committee abruptly decided to terminate the vote count and announced that the incumbent candidates themselves will decide on how the count should proceed.

The corporate media is brutally honest on rare occasions. Take for example a recent article in The New York Times Magazine, titled The Teachers’ Union’s Last Stand (05-23-10). The title itself is surprisingly sincere, since it admits that the nation’s teachers are being targeted for attack by the Obama Administration, through his “Race to the Top” education reform. And although the article has an inherently corporate bias, it contains many revelations that have been otherwise ignored in the mainstream media.
