Cracks in the Culture of Silence (tags)

One of the more tragic elements of the culture of silence is that the dominated often internalize the oppressor – they become their own dominators, and behave toward themselves and each other much as the oppressor behaves toward them. This internalization is often created and maintained by the education system that is controlled by the elite.

The Problem is Institutional Racism (tags)

Three hurdles make it difficult to talk about racism: the identity hurdle, the guilt hurdle and the renunciation hurdle. However, when I think back to the Welcoming time many years ago, I have to add a fourth hurdle: the imagination hurdle.

Between two worlds (tags)

Putin is our new tsar, quite simply. I call him an authoritarian modernizer who stands in the balancing act between neoliberalism and monarchist tradition and wants to reorganize the country from this position.

The 1.5 target calls for an eco-socialist revolution (tags)

The only responsible way forward is the IPCC's P1 scenario, which envisages rapid and radical interventions in existing production, transport and consumption structures, i.e. a massive industrial transformation and deconstruction in the main capitalist countries (15ff.).

Link Tipp: Age of Quantum materials (tags)

In a surprising discovery, an international team of researchers, led by scientists in the University of Minnesota Center for Quantum Materials, found that deformations in quantum materials that cause imperfections in the crystal structure can actually improve the material's superconducting and electrical properties.

End of a Career. Obituary The "Swabian housewife" (tags)

The "Swabian housewife" dominated politics. Now she was buried by her inventor. The state is not a business or a housewife but can borrow and become indebted to help present and future generations. System change, not climate change! Fight ignorance, not immigrants!

Power Elites: On the Great Illusion of Pluralist Liberalism (tags)

With his 1956 book "The Power Elite," C. Wright Mills put the democratic character of the US to the test. Despite formal democratic structures, a power elite formed that suspends democratic processes. Real power starts from a political directorate. In truth, only small circles have power

"There is an alternative to profit maximization" (tags)

The economy should be a part of life, not a steamroller crushing creativity and self-determination. The economy should be embedded in society; society should not be privatized and confiscated by the economy. The public sector must be expanded to create jobs.

Unconditional Basic Income - More than a Social-Political Concept (tags)

"Revolutions are very hard.. Sometimes holding fast to old structures will lead to the abyss. Then very high risks of a new beginning will be accepted to escape the far worse consequences of the collapse of the old structures." Basic income would prevent death from starvation.

Debt Dynamite Dominoes: The Coming Financial Catastrophe (tags)

-When the crisis is over, the middle classes of the western world will have been liquidated of their economic, political and social status. The global economy will have gone through the greatest consolidation of industry and banking in world history leading to a system in which only a few corporations and banks control the global economy and its resources; governments will have lost that right. The people of the western world will be treated by the financial oligarchs as they have treated the ‘global South’ and in particular, Africa; they will remove our social structures and foundations so that we become entirely subservient to their dominance over the economic and political structures of our society.-

Postscript: the insurrectional perspective (tags)

More than a year has passed since we finished the second issue of our journal Dissident, which introduced insurrectional anarchism in Sweden. We chose to introduce the insurrectional perspective because we think it brings us valuable insights and experiences. These include the critique of organisational fetischism and activism, the shift of perspective from the mass to the active minority, and the importance of projectuality. Some critics, mostly syndicalists, unfortunately interpreted the insurrectional perspective in absolute terms. This text aims to answer those concerns and move the discussion forward.

Cementing Apartheid in the South Hebron Hills (tags)

http://www.palsolidarity.org/main/ Cementing Apartheid in the South Hebron Hills May 31st, 2006 | Posted in Press Releases, Hebron Region FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The villagers of Qawawis woke up Wednesday morning to workers building a meter-high cement wall along the road that runs through their land between the illegal Israeli settlement of Susya and Hebron. The mini-wall designed to keep Palestinian cars from accessing the settler-only road will have the effect of preventing the villagers from being able to access their villages by car or being able to access their lands on the other side of the road. Sheep, tractors or even donkeys will be unable to access the land. Tomorrow morning villagers will lie down along the route of the wall demanding the a gap is left for them to be able to pass through. Qawawis villagers, whose sole income is shepherding are forced to live in caves since any structure they construct is demolished by the Israeli authorities. Today alone, thirteen structures were demolished in the south Hebron region. Most of the structures served as outhouses for Palestinians, according to a report in Haaretz (1). Qawawis’s outhouse and their taboon oven are slated for demolition by the Israeli authorities. The villagers are also subject to ongoing attacks from the Israeli settlers who occupy the area. Explosives Planted In Towers, New Mexico Technology Expert Says (tags)

The collapse of the buildings appears "too methodical" to be a chance result of airplanes colliding with the structures, said Van Romero, vice president for research at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Outwardly Progressive, Internally Corporate: Pacifica's Next Challenge (tags)

Internal problems at Pacifica stations still plague the network. While the major battle at Pacifica was won early this year, the war against a corporate style hierarchy is not over. It was this very hierarchy which enabled the General Managers to abuse their power within the stations in the first place. In order for meaningful change to occur, this structure should change, not just the personalities. Please see attached open letter by KPFK staff, highlighting problems and suggesting some solutions. (To add your name in solidarity, see directions below.)
