The EPCC NEWS gathered from news sources in Los Angeles that continued reshuffles had affected the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) management and the current board of directors. This stems from the latest news that FACLA has replaced Irbe Jamolod as FACLA manager. The EPCC NEWS as of the press time has not identified the replacement manager.

“Old soldiers never die, they just fade away...” On April 9, 1942, the United States Army Forces Far East (USAFFE), the largest US army garrison in the Pacific, surrendered its 90,000 troops to the Japanese Imperial Army. More than 30,000 US Army and 60,000 Filipino soldiers of the Philippine Commonwealth surrendered after holding out for more than four months. This past Saturday, April 10, 2010, with over a hundred veterans, widows, and advocates in attendance, Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and the Association of Widows, Advocates and Relatives for Equity (AWARE) remembered Bataan Day at the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles, California. With the American and Philippine national anthems, the commemoration began with the acknowledgement of our mother nations for which these veterans had fought and sacrificed so much. Next, Pastor Sonny Rivera of the Walk by Faith Church of the Nazarene gave the invocation.

The fratricidal intramurals in the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) turned for the worst when the FACLA board of directors last January 7 meeting suspends its president and three of its board of directors. EPCC NEWS learned today that FACLA newly elected president Gregorio “Meng “ Gatus, first vice president Paul Julian, Rita Dinsay and Linda Nery were suspended in the latest board of directors meeting presided by acting president Mandy Francisco. EPCC NEWS learned through unnamed sources that the motion was initiated by Alfonso “ Al” Aquino, a newly appointed FACLA director.

DVA DON’T DELAY, SPEED UP THE CLAIMS, YOU’RE BUSTED! Hundreds of protestors led by the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV)- a national alliance of veterans, youth marched from Historic Filipinotown in the Temple-Beverly corridor towards downtown Los Angeles to the Federal building to dramatize their protest against long delays and slow-processing of the veterans claims. The JFAV protest march started from FACLA compound at 1740 W. Temple St. Los Angeles, CA 90026. The march started at 10; 15 AM after an hour program inside the FACLA social hall. While scores of veterans, widows and seniors rode on vehicles provided by JFAV, hundreds of students from different colleges and universities marched the 2-mile route from Temple St to the federal building. This is the second march by the community led alliance towards downtown LA. The first was in 1997.

For more than eight years the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) commemorate Veterans Day with an annual parade around Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles to honor the Filipino World War II. This years 2009 will be different. Led by JFAV- a national alliance of veterans,youth and students and AWARE, composed of widows and seniors, the Filipino American community will hold a protest march towards downtown Los Angeles to the Federal building to dramatize their protest against long delays and slow-processing of the veterans claims. But the biggest lesson is- until the election process is straighten out, FACLA will be the expression of the old type Philippine politics; filled with regionalism, animosities fills the air and the cycle of traditional politics pervades the community. In one day, the FACLA elections brought FACLA from the modern age (US style) to the dark ages (Philippine Style). To compare, in November 16, elections FACLA paid $ 7,000 for a computerized elections and the elections was done within hours and elections results known to the public. In the May 31 court ordered elections. The elections were done Philippine style. With board tabulations and poll clerks with watchers coming from just one party. The Party that won the elections by a landslide- the Ideal Party.

This was the decision of the superior court on the Cynthia Gatus, Et Al, plaintiff vs Jose Baldonado, Et Al ,defendant on Case No. 400 293 last April 9, 2009. It was embodied in a 15 page transcript of proceedings issued by Jennie Campbell, court’s official reporter. Appearing for the defendants was Atty. Lorenzo Miranda Jr., official FACLA lawyer and for the plaintiff Atty. Martin Rodoy.

The CBC made a clean sweep of the elections like what they did in 2001 and 2004 under the leadership of De. Jose Baldonado.
