Cada 4 de julio, cuando el gringo celebra su conquista de estas tierras, tambi?n tiene su manera de recordarnos quien no somos "americanos": pobres, migrantes, latinxs, afroamericanxs, descapacitadxs, j?venes, la comunidad LGBT. Una de sus t?cticas es el ret?n, una violaci?n del derecho individual, y que tiene como finalidad el objetivo de encajarle a uno en una categor?a. Sigamos resistiendo.
Every July 4, the descendents of the settlers who appropriated these lands and the oppressed they have assimilated celebrate that conquest. They always seem to set up checkpoints around this time, too, as if to remind us who is not "American": the poor, the migrant, the latino/a, the African-American, the disabled, the young, the LGBT community. This violation of basic dignity, like all forms of conquest, is an attempt to place people into a category and, if possible, commodify them. Keep up the resistance.

SF Chronicle smears Berkeley animal rights activists (tags)
A sensationalist and trash piece that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle on June 11. Full of flat-out lies and deceptions. Foremost among the deceptions being the portrayal of vivisector Frederic Theunissen's experiments on songbirds as painless and innocent. These birds are immobilized and bolted down in stereotaxic devices, have holes drilled into their skulls, and electrodes inserted into their brains for recording. In most of the studies, the birds are killed to have their brains studied. Another deception is that Ralph Freeman's torture of kittens and cats is shedding light on Epilepsy. I haven't even read Freeman make this claim. No big surprise from Robert Sanders, who has compared animal rights activists to Al-Qaeda.
Palestinian Activist Riad Hamad Murdered in Texas (tags)
A prominent pro-Palestinian activist in Texas has died after drowning in a lake. Riad Hamad was the founder of the Palestine Children’s Welfare Fund http://www.pcwf.org/ and raised millions of dollars through his organization for schools, charitable organizations and hospitals. Local police say Hamad was found gagged and bound in the lake. While police say he “likely committed suicide”, questions have been raised over his death. Prior to his death, Hamad had been under FBI surveillance. In late February, FBI and IRS agents raided his office and seized forty boxes of tax returns and other documents. No charges were filed at the time, but investigators claimed they “had probable cause” to investigate. Riad Hamad was fifty-five years old.
