“It was the first, but it was a sweet success!” The Inaugural MayFlower Festival in the west-end of Historic Filipinotown was held at the parking lot of the Church of the Nazarene parking lot last May 15, 2010. This was the first time that a festival was held in this side of town. Usually may festivals were held in the east side, the center of Historic Filipinotown. Despite the heat of the sun at the end of spring, people turned up for the festivities. There were booths and displays from different community groups and participation from a broad spectrum of people from the community.

ELECTION FORUM and DEBATE IN PTOWN, A SUCCESS (tags)
Once more the Filipinotown community proved that they are united in spirit and action. The DEBATE SA PTOWN, an election forum and debate between representatives of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the Philippine presidential elections on May 10, 2010 was held in the KAPISTAHAN Grill last April 21 in Historic Filipinotown, in the heart of Los Angeles. For two hours, people gathered from different political parties and witnessed the slugfest between the supporters of the candidateswhich was filled with laughters, standing ovations and clarifications in a very lively discussions. Jay Valencia and Linda Cross of the Villanueva camp, Terry Herrera of the Aquino campaign , Bobby Reyes of the Villar-Legarda at Eliseo Art Silva of the Teodoro and Errol Santos of the Binay for vice president groups traded barbs and political views for two hours cheered on and egged by their supporters in lively debate..

On Saturday, September 26, Council President Eric Garcetti and team conducted a neighborhood walk just south of Historic Filipinotown in central Los Angeles. Teams from different community organizations like LA Conservation Corp.,People’s CORE, GEPNC and from personnel from the Council member offices knocked on door to door, asking the neighbors what their local government can do for them.

The Parol parade started at around 5:15 PM. Filipino American organizations like People’s CORE, veterans, students and parents from Burlington School, Pilipino American Democrats of Los Angeles(PALAD), Filipino Christian Church( FCC), Lord of Harvest Ministry, GEPENC, JFAV, PANA, TWNDC and SIPA marched up Temple St through the sidewalks.

Thousands of students,scores of veterans and hundred of community advocates marched during the 8th Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) 8th VETERANS DAY PARADE and Community Fair NOVEMBER 8, 2008, in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles. The march and Community Fair started and ended at the at LAKE STREET PARK,227 N. Lake St. Los Angeles, CA 90026. The Veterans Day festivities had started at 10;30 AM at the veterans memorial with an ecumenical mass and wreath laying ceremonies. The solemn tribute started with the national anthems sung by TINIG ng UCLA and the honor guards call on the line. And then the group of community leaders laid a wreath at the memorial monument. Dr. Ben Marte and Mo Nishida led the ecumenical services.

This will be the focus of the 8th Veterans Day parade.” JFAV National Coordinator Arturo P. Garcia boldly announced this optimistic prediction. The march and Community Fair will be held at LAKE STREET PARK,227 N. Lake St. Los Angeles, CA 90026. Historic Filipinotown Festival Committee held an assessment last August 18, 2008 at SIPA Social Hall and positively assessed the Aug 2. Historic Filipinotown Festival. Festival organizers, volunteers, vendors and participants came into a conclusion after the honest to goodness assessment that the festival was a success. It was attended by more than 5,000 people. he Historic Filipinotown commemoration started with a bang, with more than 800 runners at its 5K Run in the morning and ended with a whimper with songs from a fading superstar from the Philippines. It was alas --a clash of two cultures and two worlds. On August 2, at the Historic Filipinotown Festival, while more than 600 Historic Filipinotown residents waited for hours for the Filipina “ Superstar “Nora Aunor at the Historic Filipino town festival- another group of less than a hundred well-heeled academics and personalities held their affair in Remy’s On Temple Art Gallery opened the 30-panel murals Smithsonian Exhibits-SINGGALOT. While more than 3,000 people at most participated in the Historic Filipinotown festival held on the streets of Historic Filipinotown, another group of students, academics and professionals oggled at the murals celebrating the centenary of the coming of Filipinos in America. The exhibit that highlighted the Filipino-American history from 1906 to 2006. The Smithsonian exhibits was first showed in Washington DC and will be exhibit at the Remy’s on Temple Art Gallery until October 2008.

Justice for Filipino American Veterans ( JFAV ) composed of Filipino World War II veterans and their advocates, ardently participates in the first Rotary Club of Historic Filipino 5 Kilometer Run Walk last August 5. The August 4-5 activities was capped by a 5-kilometer run on Sunday Aug.5 More than 400 runners and walkers participated on the event. City Council Member Wendy Gruel awarded the winners of the 5K Run/Walk chaired by Rotarian Dony Joaquin. More than 20 veterans and youth acted as watchers along the route of the 5K run from Burlington/ Court street to Commonwealth/2nd Streets back to the fiish line.

Energized by recent victories JFAV veterans leaders led by Commanders Franco Arcebal,Peping Baclig, Jack Vergara and Nick Gadia will support the 5th year of commemorative activities on the designation by the city as Historic Filipinotown. The August 4-5 activities will be capped by a 5-kilometer run on Sunday Aug.5 More than 300 runners and walkers will participate on the event.
May 9 Town Hall Meeting on Philippine Overseas Election Held in Los Angeles (tags)
Los Angeles—The first town hall meeting in Historic Filipinotown Los Angeles on the May 14 Philippine overseas voting was held last Wednesday, May 9 at 6;30 PM at the SIPA Multi-Purpose Hall, 3200 W. Temple St. The Historic Filipinotown hall meeting was attended by the Philippine consulate officials and a modest crowd of Filipino Americans. Consul General May Jo Aragon, Consuls Helen Barber and San Agustin who heads the overseas voting at the Los Angeles consulate. They clarified and answered many questions about overseas voting from the interested multi-ethnic crowd.
