Activists Face Six Months in Prison for Opposing Controversial School of the Americas (tags)
On Monday, January 29 sixteen human rights activists will appear in federal court for peacefully walking onto a military base in protest of a controversial Army training school. Each person faces up to six months in prison and a $5,000 fine for this act of nonviolent civil disobedience.
Call Congress; Critical Vote to Close the School of the Americas Friday or Monday (tags)
For the first time in six years, there will be a vote on legislation to close the SOA/WHINSEC, the U.S. Army school whose graduates are implicated in some of the worst human rights abuses in Latin America. As countries throughout the region go through historic changes, people in the U.S. have an opportunity to make historic change THIS WEEK by demanding justice, accountability, and suspension of the SOA/WHINSEC.
