A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles.

Protestors gathered outside of LA Superior Court yesterdayas planned, and chanted “Justice for Carlos Montes, drop the charges.” 2 of the 6 felony charges against Montes were dropped becuase the statutue of limitations had expired. In the discussion of the dismissal motion, the prosecution admitted that Department of Justice records on Montes’ legal history were contradictory. Montes contends the prosecution is motivated by a desire put a damper on his social and political activism with baselss charges. Montes is currently urging people to protest against NATO on May 20, 2012 in Chicago.

Despite overwhelming public input asking for a looser ordinance that would allow medical marijuana dispensaries to locate in commercial areas throughout San Diego and remain open while they pursued permits, the San Diego City Council voted 5-2 on Monday, March 26 for an ordinance that will close down all dispensaries for at least a year and force them to locate only in industrial zones — inconveniently far from the patients they serve. Even most of the Councilmembers who voted for the ordinance, which was tweaked at the last minute to make it slightly less restrictive, made it clear that they regard medical marijuana patients and the institutions that serve them as a detriment, not an asset, to the city.

La marcha fue organizada de última hora por activistas antiracistas que estaban reaccionando a la impugnación de un juicio que favorecía el el periodista condenado. La Corte de Apelaciones del 3er Circuito había anulado la pena capital de Abu-Jamal debido al hecho de que el juez no explicó adecuadamente al jurado las consideraciónes que debían tomar en cuenta al designar una sentencia. Sin embargo, la Corte Suprema impugnó la citada decisión de la corte inferior, lo cual que abre la posibilidad de que Abu-Jamal, quien ha mantenido desde siempre su inocencia, regrese al corredor de la muerte.

Contrary to the misplaced expectations of many, the Obama administration is not about to save Mumia. Around the world, hundreds of thousands have marched for this courageous champion of oppressed. Trade unions representing millions of members have rallied to the defense of Mumia. It is urgent to expand this support into powerful labor/black action, appealing to the integrated union movement to join with the black, Latino and immigrant poor to demand that he be liberated.

Patients and providers are still being raided, and the Justice Department disappointed medical marijuana advocates by recommending a five-year prison sentence for former Morro Bay dispensary operator Charles Lynch despite the request by the judge in the case for some legal ground to be more lenient.
