Finding a quarter-billion acres for adequate feed grain harvests would mean at least a 7 percent increase in cropland worldwide at a time when farmers are already using most of the better land. Much of the newly plowed acreage would likely be marginal, subject to greater erosion and requiring extra generous applications of fertilizer and pesticides.
Indians are not anti-business. Casinos are proof of that. But most native people I know do oppose unnecessary destruction of soils and wetlands.

The federal and state government are at this moment releasing a letter to Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO) of Humboldt County, California that allows them to begin cutting seven hundred acres of the largest unprotected redwoods in the world. Called the E stands, these are the best unprotected trees of the 211,000 acres PALCO owns, the creme de la creme: trees 15' in diameter, some over 2000 years old, some groves perfect, unentered, no stumps - the forest primeval.
