Rogue newspapers or part of a continuum? (tags)
Not covering certain news can be as important as covering news. The New York Times regularly gives heavy coverage, often on the front page, of demonstrations in Moscow, yet published only a tiny article buried far inside the paper on the May Day demonstrations, some of which occurred only two blocks from its office. That is simply a different, more sophisticated method of marginalizing a mass movement than the crude, politically motivated attacks in Murdoch newspapers.
PHILIPPINES:10,000 march to press South Cotabato govt to sign environment code (tags)
KORONADAL CITY – Pressure has continued to build up on outgoing South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance-Fuentes as she bides for time before deciding on the fate of the Provincial Environment Code passed last week by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan which bans open-pit mining.
It's make-or-break for Pinoy vets' bill (tags)
World War II veteran Guillermo Rumingan had a teleconference with other veterans and their supporters and plotted what could be the last chapter of a historic run to push the Filipino Veterans’ Equity Bill. From Hawaii to California to Washington State to Virginia, they weighed their options that seemed to thin with each passing hour. After a triumphant 96-1 Senate vote to pass S-1315, which contained provisions for Filipino veterans’ equity, the bill is now stalled in the House of Representatives. Although the 110th Congress is scheduled to hold sessions until the last week of September, veterans activists are looking at the week beginning August 4 as the last window to realize an over 60-year-old dream. If nothing happens by then, all the historic gains achieved this year will come to naught. They had an appointment with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week, but she was not available and only one of her staff members faced the veterans led by Eric Lachica, executive director of the Virginia-based American Coalition of Filipino Veterans. "She wanted 290 sure votes for S-1315," Rumingan told ABS-CBN’s Balitang America.

Wildfire Suspect Charged With Arson, Murder (tags)
I smell a patsy. What is undeniable to anyone with a hint of intelligence, integrity, and an awareness of the pattern of arsons in our national forests, a pattern that asserted itself with authority in the wake of the salvage rider (allowing timber companies to benefit hugely from burnt, sometimes healthy trees), is that there is a coordinated, albeit perhaps loosely, effort to maintain a salvage logging profit for these companies. What you can pretty much count on is that the investigation of Raymond Oyler will not lead to any such thing, which is why I call him a patsy.
Shaking Uncontrollably: Does Guzzling Gas Make You Piss Fire? (tags)
Bad ideas are like starfish: You can cut them up, but unless you squash them into jelly and incinerate the remains, they will multiply. I’m not really saying that we should go around murdering idiots . . . but this week’s “news” certainly made me want to beat a few people mercilessly.

How GI bullies are making enemies of their Iraqi friends (tags)
Still refusing to acknowledge a rising consensus among observers that it faces a broad-based nationalist movement, President George Bush insisted in a weekend radio address that "a small faction is attempting to . . . seize power", and his Baghdad spokesman, Dan Senor, railed against "two-bit thugs . . . despised by a majority of Iraqis". But, while the Americans kill Iraqis in the numbers that they have taken to, they will have little or no support from Iraqis - no politician or religious leader can afford such an association. Personally many find it distasteful and if they were to support it publicly, they would go through their lives fearing a fate similar to that of the US security contractors in Falluja.

Sugar-coating U.S. motives in Iraq (Toronto Star) (tags)
Invading armies are often coy when it comes to admitting their true motives. Certainly a desire to seize territory and resources are rarely among the motives modern invading armies tend to highlight. One can understand the preference for looking like a liberator rather than a pillaging bully.
