Military in hot pursuit of NPA insurgents (tags)
The military mounted a new operation against communist insurgents who raided a mining firm in Compostela Valley, officials said Friday. Suspected members of the New People’s Army, reports said, attacked the Apex Mining Co. late Thursday near Masara village in the town of Maco. Gunmen, numbering more than 50, disarmed the security guards and carted their weapons, said Col. Benito Antonio de Leon, spokesman for the Army’s 10th Infantry Division. He said the NPA torched several equipment owned by the mining firm before escaping under cover of darkness. “Troops are pursuing the rebels and we are awaiting reports from ground commanders and so far there have been no clashes between soldiers and rebels,” De Leon told The Manila Times.

NY Times Iraq Death Chart Omits Worst Slaughter: Civilian Victims of US Military (tags)
A Brookings Institution analysis of the deaths caused in Iraq over a 2-week period is misleading. It completely omits the deaths caused by U.S. forces, which would likely have more than doubled the total, and increased the civilian death total even more dramatically.

The televised execution of Iraqi wounded in Fallujah by U.S. Marines is just the tip of an ugly iceberg. The U.S. has adopted a policy of war crimes and genocide in Fallujah and elsewhere that puts it right up there with Milosevic and his thugs.

All of us who have resisted the Bush administration’s militaristic and illegal invasions are “insurgents.” We will hold George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, et. al., accountable for every single death that they cause, and we will continue to demand the truth from the press.
The onslaught in Fallujah: Shooting at a fly that has landed on a horse’s head (tags)
On the face of it, the siege of Fallujah seems to be going relatively well for the US troops. Most of the city has been captured and according to the mass media “Operation Phantom Fury” will be finished in a couple of days. However, things are not so simple. The war in Iraq was also supposed to be over, whereas it clearly is not. The same applies to Fallujah, where an official victory may well turn out to be a Pyrrhic one.
Falluja: Blood lust dominates mainstream media (tags)
The Falluja battle is obscenely one-sided and, on the American side, thoroughly cowardly. The US military employs the most modern and horrific weapons to eradicate a few thousand lightly armed fighters.

Iraqi Exit Strategy Plan and Analysis (tags)
I have adapted a statement that was made by the venerable Buddhist monk, scholar, and poet Thich Nhat Hanh in Washington, D.C on June 1, 1966 regarding the disasters of The Vietnam War. It is astounding how closely his insight relates to the war in Iraq today in 2004. I have juxtaposed and substituted all the Vietnam references and language with Iraqi references and language. The transposition that follows is certainly discerning. Here is my adaptation.

US: Fierce Falluja fighting recalls Vietnam (tags)
"And this is like Hue City in Vietnam," he said, referring to the former imperial capital where in 1968 US troops faced the most ferocious street fighting of the communists' decisive Tet offensive. Marines, who took part in defeating Saddam's armed forces a year ago, said the resistance they were now facing was tougher than anything thrown at them by the old regime's once vaunted Republican Guards. Sergeant James Ramsel, of the battalion's Alpha Company, said there had been no let-up in the resistance. "It's been going on all night; it's still going on."
Iraqis break U.S. siege of Falluja to deliver humanitarian aid! (tags)
Iraqi volunteers drive with humanitarian supplies towards areas under military siege by U.S. occupation forces in the town of Falluja, from depots in a Baghdad suburb April 8, 2004. When masses of ordinary Iraqis defy the occupation army to travel to Falluja with the intent of delivering food and medicine to those under U.S. bombs, it should be obvious that what is occurring in Iraq is a true people's uprising. Those who call the insurgents "Saddam remnants" or "dead enders", are deluding themselves. Resistance comes in many forms (photo - Ali Jasim/Reuters). EMERGENCY IRAQ PROTEST. Friday, April 9 - 5 pm. On the Ground, Straight From the Top (tags)
U.S. military commanders throughout Iraq have been saying for months -- almost unequivocally -- that they are winning the war against Iraqi insurgents, religious extremists and foreign terrorists in their sectors. This, even as attacks against U.S. forces increased across the country and a series of high-profile bombings and helicopter shoot-downs helped create the impression in the world media that the insurgents were gaining ground. Vernon Loeb, defense correspondent for The Post, asked commanders from the four major U.S. Army divisions in Iraq why they thought they were winning, and what they used as measures of success. Responding via e-mail, they had plenty to say. Excerpts:
