The Anti-War Movement, the Troops, & Some Lessons from Vietnam (tags)
Life inside the U.S. military reflects the conflicting class interests in this country, often in its deadliest forms. While technically a “volunteer” military, the great bulk of its recruits come from working class families and are largely joining because of a lack of job and educational opportunities. For them, signing up is a chance to acquire the skills they need to get a decent job once they become civilians, though, in reality, military service has little to offer in this regard. On the other hand, the majority of the military’s professional officers and policy makers come from more privileged layers of the population. For them, the military is a career where they can take their “rightful place” lording over the grunts and climb the ladder as they would if they were working for a corporation or financial institution. Because of this divide in opportunity and expectations, which is rooted in class inequality, the great majority of soldiers are subject to the arrogance, lies, and disregard for their personal well-being at the hands of their superiors, as are workers are to the capitalists in civilian life.

The Anti-War Movement Sourced the Democrats’ Victory! (tags)
The Democratic Party, read “The War Lite” Party, is basking in the glow of victory today. It has regained control of the House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate for the first time in 12-years. The two issues that it won on-The Iraqi War and the whacky persona of President George W. Bush-had little or nothing to do with the Democratic Party. Those two matters were actually sourced by activists in the Anti-Iraqi War Movement!

In a rally that included a mini-parade, speeches, a sing along and the waving of plenty of roses, the Ladies in Pink were in great form. Cindy Sheehan said they are “making a difference.” And, Actress Susan Sarandon read an open letter to Laura Bush, in which she mocked Laura’s husband, “The Decider,” as a warmonger.

The following is a report back from a member of the Southern California Anarchist Federation (SCAF), seeking to further open the debate on building a long-term movement for radical social change, beyond simply ending the war on Iraq.

The Shriver auditorium on the Johns Hopkins U. campus was packed to capacity to hear the anti-Iraqi War messages of her and others. Sheehan said, we need an “Opposition Party” and that Congress is mostly made up of cowards, who have given “a liar” and “a maniac,” - George W. Bush - the power to invade Iraq. If Congress doesn’t shape up, she said: “Fire them!”
Christopher Hitchens Panders to War Parties! (tags)
Christopher Hitchens, the scourge of the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta, is at it again! The ex-Lefty has written a rant defending the indefensible - the Iraqi War! His main point: Saddam Hussein was a thug, so therefore the Iraqi war was justified. The Straussian Neocon, however, got it wrong! Under International Law, regime change isn’t a legal cause for a war. This is why Bush and his poodle, Blair, had to “fix” the intelligence around the policy.

Kerry vs. Kerry-lite (tags)
As for Iraq, if Kerry has a problem with Bush, it's that he didn't drag France, Germany and Russia into the war, preferring to strike a grabby, it's all mine, pose, rather than the "let's divide up the loot" approach the Democrats favor. Apparently, a gang rape is better than a rape carried out by a lone assailant, which, I gather, would make a gang rapist a rapist-lite, and therefore more worthy of our backing than a rapist who goes it alone. But, for the record, Washington hasn't gone it alone in Iraq, managing to cobble together a coalition, though one lacking France, Germany and Russia, whose backing, in some perverted twist of reasoning, is supposed to have invested the rape of Iraq with legitimacy. Apparently, if you can lure other renowned rapists into a gang rape, it gives the whole sordid affair moral weight.

Should The Anti-War Movement become More Agressive? (tags)
The Bush propaganda machine shamelessly glorifies the U.S. invasion of Iraq, while refusing to say a word about the numbers of Iraqis killed. Few voters complain. Worse, most of our corporate-dominated media do not complain. Most Democratic candidates in next year’s election strive to outdo Republicans in praising the American military’s heroism and skill in mopping up an Iraqi army already weakened by years of sanctions.
The Anti War Movement: Why, How and Where (tags)
Constructive Criticism of the Anti War Movement: To a movement that is based on ideals of democracy, and that has constantly attacked the current administration for not listening to dissenting voices – to the voices of people – I am sure that such criticism will be welcomed. I present this criticism with the hope that it will lead to the evolution of stronger democracies within communities, of greater involvement by the citizens of USA in issues of equality, peace and justice.
