Remembering, that the District of Columbia Air National Guard operates out of Andrews Air Force Base, which is only 10 miles from the Pentagon, it is clear that on 9-11 the Air National Guard didn't quite live up to "the highest possible state of readiness" or to being "the premier organization for fulfilling our federal, state, and community missions".

The installation's mission is to maintain fighter aircraft on continuous peacetime air defense alert to preserve U.S. air sovereignty. During wartime, the mission is to mobilize personnel and equipment for deployment to designated locations and to use air-to-air munitions in strategic defense of the North American continent.
