He made two main points in his talk: that there are three "strains" of American media — the corporate mainstream, the white alternative or "rebel" press, and media owned and controlled by people of color; and that since the 1840's the U.S. government has regulated every technological change in the media in a way that favors the interests of giant corporations over ordinary people.

Dr. Helen Caldicott, a powerful international activist against nuclear weapons and nuclear power for over a quarter-century, spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in San Diego October 23 and painted a picture of global warming as an imminent apocalypse that requires immediate action to develop alternative energy sources and stop using fossil fuels. She also denounced the public-relations campaigns aimed at convincing people that global warming isn't a threat, and said climate-change deniers like Rush Limbaugh directly threaten the survival of the earth and therefore should not be allowed to broadcast.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), an organization with considerable lobbying power in Washington D.C. which represents owners of media broadcasting outlets, will bring its annual conference, the Radio Road Show to San Diego October 4-8. The NAB was a major force behind the FCC's deregulation of media ownership guidelines and continues to lobby for the ability of a relatively few corporations to control a majority of the media outlets available to the American public. Over 100 people turned out in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego October 27 for part of an international series of actions against the U.S. war in Afghanistan. But participation dropped off from the previous anti-war action two weeks ago after factional clashes prevented the largest antiwar group in San Diego, the Coalition for Peace and Justice, from endorsing the event.

Over 170 San Diegans Protest First Day of U.S. Bombing Afghanistan (tags)
Over 170 people attended a rally and candlelight vigil in downtown San Diego October 7 to protest the first day of U.S. bombing raids against Afghanistan as revenge for the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. September 11. The San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice, which organized the protest, considered the turnout excellent, especially for an emergency alert on short notice.
