I’ll miss Hugo. When I first was introduced to him in Porto Alegre in 2003, he greeted me, “Mi padre,” and said he learned a lot from me. I was dubious about this and thought he was simply buttering me up, like any two-bit politician. Then he started telling me what he learned from Development Debacle, Deglobalization, and Dark Victory. I was stupefied; the guy actually read my stuff!

So when I put on my denim pants and rubber shoes to go to Manila’s Quiapo district to buy some flowers, I thought that I was merely doing what my father had asked me to do: to offer flowers and prayers for a dead man.

Welcome to Israel's great "democracy", as seen from the Palestinian perspective! Of course, this kind of brutal sadism is routine for Palestinians; this time, Shin Bet got caught doing it, something they loathe to have happen. And of course, the one thing Israel will understand, no country dares to do (for fear of being labeled "anti-Semitic") , and that is immediately, pull all funding from Israel, period, end of discussion, until it decides to act like the kind of mature, adult country which does not beat journalists senseless because they have had the courage to tell the truth.
