Los Angeles City Council Passes Resolution to Support AB 199 and AJR 6 for Filipino WWII V (tags)

The Los Angeles City Council today unanimously approved the resolution in support of California AB 199 and AJR 6 in a legislative effort to recognize the presence and contribution of Filipino World War II veterans in our history books, To support Asssemblyperson Fiona Ma?s effort City Coouncil member Richard Alarcon introduced the resolution. It was seconded by Councilmen Tom Lebonge, Eric Garcetti, Jose Huizar,Ed Reyes and Bill Rosendhal, a Vietnam War veteran. All of them spoke to support the resolution to the delight of the crowd.

“ Old soldiers never die, we want equity” That was the battle cry of scores of veterans, widows, relatives and advocates from the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and the Association of Widows, Advocates and Relatives for Equality (AWARE) who marked the 69th year of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) Day, July 26, 1941 with a community forum in LA. The commemorative event was held last Monday , July 26, 2010 at the Silver Lake Medical Center (SLMC) ground floor at the Cafeteria, 1711 W. Temple St. Los Angeles, CA 90026 .

PGC CELEBRATES 80th B-Day of Lola/Nanay Lydia. (tags)

Sons and daughters, relatives and the whole Gaviola-Espiritu clans celebrated the 80th birhday of Lola Lydia S. Espiritu last May 8 at Golden Coast Buffet in Alhambra, CA. Present were all her grandsons and grandaughters and great grand daughters with their nephwes and neices from all over California. Also present were her only living sister Penafrancia Sals and sister-in laws Luzviminda Espiritu from LA and Carmez Zita from San Diego. Musical numbers, dances and games were given for her honor.

“It was the first, but it was a sweet success!” The Inaugural MayFlower Festival in the west-end of Historic Filipinotown was held at the parking lot of the Church of the Nazarene parking lot last May 15, 2010. This was the first time that a festival was held in this side of town. Usually may festivals were held in the east side, the center of Historic Filipinotown. Despite the heat of the sun at the end of spring, people turned up for the festivities. There were booths and displays from different community groups and participation from a broad spectrum of people from the community.

With eleven days to the election day in the Philippines, the campaign heats up to the finish in the United States. - In Los Angeles, the BANTAY PILIPINAS, an election watch dog for the Philippines, held a forum debate last April 21 in Kapistahan Grill in Historic Filipinotown attended by spokespersons of the candidates. The debate was very civil but was heated. More than a hundred people attended the forum. The Villar camp was represented by Bobby Reyes, Teodoro by muralist Eliseo Art Silva, Eddie Villanueva by union leader Jay Valencia and Linda Cross, Aquino by Atty. Terry Herrera and Binay by Errol Santos. The moderators for the event was Austin Baul and Cheryl Zarate ably assisted by Cory Esguerra, Cilla Esguerra, Emily Chan and Wendy Natividad.

ELECTION FORUM and DEBATE IN PTOWN, A SUCCESS (tags)

The DEBATE SA PTOWN, an election forum and debate between representatives of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the Philippine presidential elections on May 10, 2010 was held in the KAPISTAHAN Grill last April 21 in Historic Filipinotown, in the heart of Los Angeles. For two hours, people gathered from different political parties and witnessed the slugfest between the supporters of the candidateswhich was filled with laughters, standing ovations and clarifications in a very lively discussions. Jay Valencia and Linda Cross of the Villanueva camp, Terry Herrera of the Aquino campaign , Bobby Reyes of the Villar-Legarda at Eliseo Art Silva of the Teodoro and Errol Santos of the Binay for vice president groups traded barbs and political views for two hours cheered on and egged by their supporters in lively debate..
