Villaraigosa: The Myth of The Progressive Mayor (tags)
While Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa disappointed supporters and failed to deliver any progressive policies whatsoever, he was hardly a failure to those he really serves. Indeed, for developers, real estate tycoons, billionaires, and school privatization profiteers, Villaraigosa's eight year reign was a smashing success.

Does California Need a Constitutional Convention? (tags)
Does California need a constitutional convention? The question is being raised by a number of organizations, including the Bay Area Council — a group of business leaders based in the San Francisco Bay Area — and the California chapters of the League of Women Voters, Common Cause and the Mexican-American Political Association, all of whom sent representatives to an August 1 meeting that attracted an overflow crowd to the Mission Valley library. The push for a convention is driven largely by the state's inability to govern itself effectively, hamstrung by the current constitution's 2/3 vote requirement to pass a budget or raise taxes, Proposition 13, legislative term limits, legislative "safe seats" and initiatives that have put all but 7 percent of the budget outside the control of the political process.
Queer Democrats Endorse Busby for Congress — Barely (tags)
The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club narrowly endorsed Francine Busby in her fourth attempt to unseat an incumbent Republican Congressmember in San Diego North County's 50th Congressional District. Her supporters promoted her as the most electable candidate because she's built up a large following of volunteers and contributors in the district; her opponents said she'd fudged the question of same-sex marriage equality on the club's questionnaire while her primary opponent, Tracy Emblem, had answered it forthrightly.

The Filipino American Community Problems on the Pilipino Language (tags)
August is usually the National Language Week ( Linggo ng Wika) in the Philippines. Pesante-USA presented this paper this week for Filipinos in the Philippines and America to ponder. Its an irony while the Philippine government ( US-Arroyo regime) is reverting to the colonial mendicancy of propagating English to compete in the international market for labor exports, Filipinos abroad and Filipino Americans in the U.S are advancing the propagation of Pilipino in the United States. This is an important development we should monitor and work on. The more than 3 million Filipinos in the United States might be away from their homeland but their patriotism is afire and will never forget their roots.
Tom Hayden regrets his past support for Israeli aggression. Warns of dangers ahead. (tags)
In 1982, Tom Hayden shocked peace activists by his unqualified support of Israel's aggression in Lebanon. Hayden now writes of the political pressures he was under, and warns that politicians should *not* be afraid to speak up now, as he was then. It is yet another reason why Bay Area progressives will continue to oppose the agenda of AIPAC, and protest its presence this coming December.

Democrat Atty Gen Lockyer enthusiastically joins Republican Schwarzenegger in murdering human beings with our tax dollars, and is supported by pro-death penalty Senators Boxer and Feinstein, all Democratic candidates for President, the Democrats sitting on the US Supreme Court (Breyer dissented this time only) and sitting on the 9th Circuit. You get what you vote for.

LA on coverof NYTimes today, but nothing here? (tags)
I was surprised to see that LA was on the cover of the NYTimes today for the mayoral election (I haven't been following it, I'm up in the Bay Area) and that there isn't any mention of the results on here. I'm wondering what the alternative view is on this guy. NYT paints him as a "union organizer." If that's true, why no mention here of a potential 'good guy' in office? Plus, if nothing else, the first Hispanic mayor in over 100 years . . .
