Pass the Equity Bill First Before Talking About Tibet-JFAV (tags)
Compensate the Filipino World War II veterans. Pass the Equity Bill first and do Justice to the Veterans, before you speak of justice and freedom in Tibet.” This was the suggestion the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV), a California based alliance of youth, veterans and community groups pushing justice and equity to Republican Senator John McCain and Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and the U.S. Congress. Arturo P. Garcia, JFAV Coordinator said: “When the leaders of the US Congress speaks of freedom in far-away countries like Tibet in China, while perpetuating injustice in America, it is just playing plain politics. Tend to your own first. Give justice to Filipinos who were marginalized for 62 years and then speak for the freedom for others later. “
100 Killed/ This Day in History: Tiananman Square (tags)
Activism*Human Rights*Global Unity ========================== Originally intending to do a write up commemorating the 400 injured and hundreds jailed and killed by the People's Liberation Army on June 4, 1989, I had the good fortune to interview a group of students from China. To my dismay, their views ranged from complete apathy to nationalistic rationalizations of the regime's actions (it was a long time ago/it was very complicated/those people weren't working). That view sharply contrasts with that of Americans towards, say, Kent State, where four antiwar protesters were shot by National Guardsment.

". . . Why Haiti has been persecuted for the last 200 years? Because it is an affront to the colonial powers to have slaves rise up and defeat them. It is a bad example. [Applause.] There are a lot of lessons to be learned, and they don't want it ever to happen again. [Applause continues.]" -- Margaret Prescod, Pacifica Radio
