ONTARIO, California - Members of the immigrant community in Ontario protested the lack of police compliance with a state law designed to reduce the number of cars impounded at checkpoints, where drivers are detained without any probable cause. About 60 people marched through the city, and then presented their demands to the city council.

POMONA - The community organization United Voices of Pomona continued its protest against the approved waste transfer station, and added to its demands the mayor's resignation. The Los Angeles district attorney filed charges filed against one of Mayor Rothman's donors, alleging that Alfredo Solis, the owner of Western Recycling, had laundered $15,000 in contributions to Rothman's 2008 mayoral campaign through acquaintances.1 This latest scandal propelled the United Voices to demand Rothman's resignation, declaring, "we don't want trash money running our city."

POMONA, California - A city council meeting to decide the fate of a proposed waste transfer station in the city's impoverished east end became contentious as various factions interacted at a pre-meeting rally. After a long corporate presentation and an even longer public comment period, the council voted against the vast majority of the community to approve the project. Protest, including some shoving involving police, ensued.

POMONA - The prophetic voice of Cornel West was heard by hundreds of people this evening at Cal Poly Pomona. Dr. West lectured on self-knowledge, what it means to be human, suffering, and the Occupy movement's role in confronting social, civic, and economic death of our society, as well as its moral bankruptcy. The CSUPD, however, sent a different message when its agents silenced an activist by prohibiting him from handing out flyers.

POMONA, California - A youthful group of about fifty gathered in downtown Pomona to march, rally, and otherwise lift their voices about the need for immigration reform, social justice, and popular participation in decisionmaking processes. The march was organized and executed exclusively by the youth, who, while accepting the solidarity of more established movement activists, were also taking very seriously their responsibility to lead the movement.

REDLANDS, California - In a youthful and spirited demonstration, a group of about 75 protested the racist Arizona law SB 1070, which requires police to check the immigration status of anyone suspected of being paperless and prohibits looking for work or workers in public, effectively banning day labor. The protesters marched through the busy farmer's market and street fair on State Street, braving some ugly opposition before returning to their initial rally point of the corner of Orange Street and Redlands Boulevard for a final demonstration of conscience at the end of the blocked-off street.

CLAREMONT, California - Despite a drizzle, students from Pomona and other Claremont colleges held a follow-up rally in support of the unionization drive for food service workers. Last week, students, arm-in-arm with workers, delivered hundreds of petitions requesting card-check certification for an independent union to Pomona College president David Oxtoby. The petition also requested non-interference from the College during the unionization drive.

CLAREMONT, California - The student movement made an unexpected move in solidarity with university employees in a large-scale action at Pomona College, a private institution and part of the Claremont consortium of colleges at the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. In response to an explosive-ridden seige of their community, residents of the Woodlawn Mobile Home Park attended the Pomona City Council meeting on Monday, June 15. During the public comment period, one by one, approximately thirty residents, representing adults, the elderly, and children, explained what happened to them. Some became so emotionally overwhelmed that they were unable to continue.
