Pope Francis welcomed members of the global Jubilee movement to the Vatican on Wednesday as they were received for high level meetings with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Cardinal Peter Turkson, head of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The Catholic Church, various Christian Churches, Jewish groups and trade unions founded the global Jubilee campaign that successfully cancelled more than 130 billion dollars in sovereign debt and has won tax policies to benefit people living in the poorest countries of the world.

AGRARIAN REFORM 29 bishops urge Congress to extend CARP (tags)
Twenty-nine Catholic prelates, including Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, have asked the House of Representatives to immediately extend through legislation the 20-year-old Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP). The CARP expires on June 10 this year.

The Alliance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines (AJLPP) based in the United States express its utmost dismay when they heard that Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales of the Catholic Church in the Philippines blamed both the US-Arroyo regime and the revolutionary forces in the Philippines as guilty of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and frustrated assassinations of hundreds upon hundreds of Filipinos. Mario Santos, AJLPP National Corodinator stated that: "We were furthered alarmed and dismayed when he (Rosales )called these political killings as “gatingga (Tagalog for a “mere speck”.) We found this statement as profane, gross and revolting as the abuses of the Catholic Church in the United States that they tried to cover up and now that are trying to pay. What Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales implied that military forces could engage in the aforesaid human rights violations on the false assumption that their revolutionary opponents do likewise is so unwise and unjust. "

Just prior to the appointment of Ratzinger to Pontiff, I happened to cross the path of Cardinal George Pell in Pitt Street, Sydney, early one evening. I couldn’t help (politely) inquiring of him whether he was a man of God. He responded, much to my amazement, “I don’t know about, ‘man of God’, I am a Catholic Priest!” Regardless of anything previously stated by various commentators, his answer to me was forthright, candid and accurate (by his own admission). I was somewhat disarmed by his candour and manner, which was in contrast to his bearing and physical stature, he is a huge man around 6’ 5”, I would guess.
