A top official of the leftwing Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (New Patriotic Alliance, Bayan) in Panay narrowly escaped an alleged attempt to abduct or assassinate him, militant groups here claimed Wednesday. Aurelio Bosque, spokesperson of Bayan-Panay, said two unidentified men who were separately riding motorcycles followed him from their office in Jaro District, Iloilo City on Monday and pursued him until he and two companions sought refuge at a Kababayan Center.

Thousands of FIlipino protesters led by the militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP-The Philippine Peasant Movement) marched Friday to denounce President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's campaign to amend the constitution and what they said was a spate of political killings in the Philippines. The Philippine Peasant Support Network(Pesante-USA) expressed solidarity with this nationwide mass action in the Philippines. As a Filipino peasant advocacy group, Pesante was formed in the U.S in 1991 and is a member of the Aliiance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines (AJLPP).

The second impeachment complaint against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was formally filed today at the office of the secretary general of the House of Representatives, who confirmed it as the “first complaint” filed at his office. At 8:09 a.m., House secretary general Roberto P. Nazareno received a copy of the complaint by lead complainant Nini Quezon-Avanceña, as endorsed by opposition lawmakers House Minority Floor Leader Francis Escudero and San Juan Representative Ronaldo Zamora. The complainants held vigil at the House last night in anticipation of the filing of another complaint by lawyer Oliver Lozano, who filed the first impeachment case against the president last year.
