San Diego Queer Democrats Reject Progressive, Endorse Moderate for Congress (tags)
The San Diego Democrats for Equality, a predominantly Queer Democratic party club, decisively rejected the Congressional candidacy of progressive former Assemblymember Lori Saldaña at its regular meeting January 26. Instead they endorsed moderate Scott Peters on the ground that he'd be a better "fit" for the district, could raise more money and would have a better shot at unseating Republican incumbent Brian Bilbray.
Health Advocate McGuire Speaks Out for Single-Payer (tags)
Andrew McGuire, who's been active in grass-roots health campaigns for over 35 years, came to San Diego May 7 to speak at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church as part of his campaign to get a single-payer health care system enacted and operating in California. McGuire was eloquent about the "immoral, demeaning and lethal" health care system the U.S. has now, and the political pressures making reform impossible at the federal level,but even some progressives in his audience were concerned about details in the plan he was promoting.
Pavley Levine Mailer Battle Continues (tags)
California Senate Candidates Pavley and Levine continue to send mailers, and Democrats despairing the departure of legendary State Senator Sheila Kuehl can only despair some more. Levine sends pictures of himself hugging a little kitty and his dog, who apparently likes him. His dog, however, doesn't pay TV cable bills, and TV cable consumers whom Levine screwed as Chairman of the Assembly Utilities Committee can only wish he cared as much for them as he does for cats and dogs.

Senate Candidate Fran Pavley Upsets Supporters with Code Words in Health Care Mailer (tags)
Fran Pavley's Health Care Mailer included a photo of her with progressive State Senator Sheila Kuehl and identified Kuehl as author of the vetoed single payer Universal Health Act, SB 840. However, not only did Pavley not endorse Kuehl's bill in the mailer, she included code words accepting the role of private insurance and opposing single payer and the economies of it.
