"A Menace to Society: Or How An Uppity Black Man Got Banned From Cody’s Bookstore" (tags)

Joseph Anderson is the outspoken author of a number of commentaries (available online) criticizing the racist stereotyping and pathologizing of Black males from young to old – and sometimes even by those particular *Black* authors, filmmakers and documentary makers eagerly given investment financing, contracts, buy-outs, royalties, grants, distribution, or platforms by white corporations and institutions to do so – attitudinally leading to the legalized, collectively *serial* murders of unarmed Black males by cops, white (or even 'honorary white') wanna-be cops (like George Zimmerman), and other racist assailants all over this country, as well as to Black males' systematic incarceration. This important, exemplified, 'vintage' article, asked for and published (at the literary journal "Konch") by the internationally famous African American author and UC Berkeley professor emeritus, Ishmael Reed, REVISITS and DETAILS some of Anderson's own experience with, and reflections upon, this – including, especially, white liberal racism. Unfortunately, like all prophetic writing, these reflections are all too true even today.

Congressmember Davis Speaks at Orderly Town-Hall Meeting (tags)

Elsewhere in the country Democratic Congressmembers are being heckled and sometimes driven off the stage when they try to hold town-hall meetings to explain the health-care reform bill the House is currently debating. Not in San Diego August 11, where Congressmember Susan Davis was able to hold a meeting in peace and discuss the issue in a polite, civil manner. This was largely due to the strategy of the sponsoring organization, the Hillcrest Town Council, which admitted their own members and Hillcrest residents first -- thereby assuring Davis a mostly liberal audience that wouldn't try to disrupt her meeting.

“Annie Jr.” Opens to a Standing Ovation (tags)

Clearwater, FL – Spectacular, remarkable and entertaining are just a few of the words to describe the performance of the forty youth from ages two to seventeen, on stage in the Broadway production of "Annie Jr." produced by Doria Kintzel, presented by International Youth Theater, at the Francis Wilson Playhouse Theater, on August 8. With proceeds to Youth for Human Rights Florida, the kids performed to a packed house as the young performers sang and danced the story of Annie Jr., with opening skits educating the audience about Human Rights, including most appropriately “The Right to Play.”

Health Advocate McGuire Speaks Out for Single-Payer (tags)

Andrew McGuire, who's been active in grass-roots health campaigns for over 35 years, came to San Diego May 7 to speak at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church as part of his campaign to get a single-payer health care system enacted and operating in California. McGuire was eloquent about the "immoral, demeaning and lethal" health care system the U.S. has now, and the political pressures making reform impossible at the federal level, but even some progressives in his audience were concerned about details in the plan he was promoting.

Participation Matters (tags)

Each speech President Obama has delivered since his inauguration seems to paint a picture of change that is being created on the fly. I believe that – by nature of our humanity – we are all artists, and that we can all add a spontaneous stroke here or there to this potential masterpiece. But our current circumstances, as you will read in the below Op-Ed piece, present a serendipitous opportunity for public audiences to participate in community-based theater, and through that, to collaboratively address our social problems. If President Obama continues to publicly hold us accountable for re-creating a better America, this is one proven avenue for us to respond.

Audience Packs Library for Medical Marijuana Film (tags)

For many of the 300 people who packed the San Diego Public Library screening of "Waiting to Inhale," Jed Riffe's film on the medical marijuana issue, it's not just a movie but something they're living. The film begins with a raid on a medical marijuana growers' collective, and at least two members of the audience talked about having gone through similar raids from San Diego County law enforcement just days earlier. The audience was highly partisan but the film itself was surprisingly fair-minded and even-handed in its approach to the issue.

Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” Speaks to Today’s World (tags)

Political and religious authority is crumbling in a crisis of faith. The late Leonard Bernstein put those themes, and much more, in his concert triumph, “Mass.” After eight years of Bush-Cheney, the priest/pedophile scandal, coupled with the costly Wall St. Bailout, the loss of trust in our institutions is rampant. If the people want real change, they are going to have to rely on themselves, and on each other to create, in unity, the world that they desire.

Town hall calls for impeachment to save the Constitution (tags)

A regional town hall on the subject "Are Peace and Impeachment Possible?" was held in Oakland to reaffirm the need and political viability of impeaching Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Documenting Baggage (tags)

On November 24th, 2006, I traveled to the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California, to observe and document how people were spending their time on “the busiest shopping day of the year,” the day after Thanksgiving. To narrow down the focus of my documentary, I decided to use photos of people and the bag or bags that they were carrying. The bag a person carries can lead to many assumptions about the person carrying the bag. In some cases, the owner of the bag may not be the person who carries the bag, though I believe the bags shown in Baggage are all carried by their new or longtime owners.

Leave it to a Far Right Likudite, Benjamin Netanyahu, to show up on 09/06/06, in Philadelphia, “The City of Brotherly Love,” and beat the drum for a U.S. war with Iran. What a lethal irony! In his spiel, Netanyahu, an ultra Israeli Hawk, sounded like President George W. Bush, while also ignoring Israel’s many wrongs against the peoples of Palestine and Lebanon.

WITHERED Arts Journalism in LA? (tags)

"All historic epochs have cynics who pontificate that everything under the sun has been accomplished, and that there are "no more movements" on the horizon. Such proclamations are the clearest sign that all hell is about to break loose. Artists have always reacted to the world around them - with their collective actions forming schools or movements. To declare that we are in a "post-movement" period while the world is burning is nothing short of delusional."
