Witness to Police Misconduct Speaks to ACLU (tags)
Chris Carlino spoke at the annual meeting of the San Diego chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) February 18 and relived her experience being pepper-sprayed by an abusive sheriff's deputy at a fundraiser for Congressional candidate Francine Busby eight months earlier. Her attorney, Mike Marrinan, and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse director Beth Givens also spoke at the meeting, and San Diego ACLU staff attorney David Blair-Loy laid out the group's local legal agenda.

For over 10 years, the Chicano Mexicano Prison Project (a project of Union del Barrio) has been one of the few Mexicano-Raza organizations working to expose the role that the Prison Industry plays in oppression and exploitation of Mexicanos. On May 10, 2003, the Chicano Mexicano Prison Project will organize the 7th National Conference On Raza Prisoners and the 10th Anniversary of CMPP.

In the New York Times of July 2, columnist Nicholas Kristof attacked FBI foot dragging in the investigation of last year's anthrax attacks. In particular, Kristof pointed to the failure of the FBI to fully investigate "Mr. Z," rumored within the biodefense community to be a prime suspect. "If Mr Z. were an Arab national, he would have been imprisoned long ago," Kristof commented. "Mr. Z" is identified elsewhere in news stories and on the internet as Steven J. Hatfill, an American bioterrorism specialist who is reported to have served in the Rhodesian military in the 1970s.
