Isabel Avila's "Parallel Worlds" at the Vincent Price Art Museum (tags)

In her first solo exhibit, photographer (and contributor to LA IndyMedia) Isabel Avila explores the dual identities of Native American and Mexican American cultures, emphasizing people active in their communities. Avila's photographs, taken over the last few years, are complimented by video discussions, many featuring her photo subjects but also additional people, including Gloria Arellanes, one of the early Brown Berets and member of the Tongva community. (Excerpts of these dialogs can be found further down in this article.) The free exhibit is currently at the Vincent Price Museum through December 8. It will then then relocate to Rancho Cucamonga's Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art and run from January 22 – March 16, 2013. (Location details within the article.)

Veteran Chicano activist's home raided by agencies (tags)

A veteran Los Angeles Chicano activist is speaking out today after what he says was a joint Sheriff’s Department and FBI raid on his Alhambra home on Tuesday morning. Carlos Montes is one of the original Brown Berets who was a key leader of the Chicano Power movement of the 1960’s and 1970s. He says his current activism in the immigrant rights and international workers solidarity movement has put him back in the crosshairs of federal agents. Montes was arrested in his home during a pre-dawn raid in which authorities confiscated countless photos, documents and even two kaffiyehs. He says the authorities have charged him with illegal possession of a firearm. Pacifica’s Ernesto Arce visited Montes at his home today. He files this report from Los Angeles.

The Time is Now to Support Carlos Montes, Beloved Chicano Activist (tags)

A very important trial is coming up this Tuesday in LA. There will be a large crowd of supporters outside the criminal court building at 8 am demanding justice for Carlos Montes. What justice would mean in this case is that the District Attorney Steve Cooley drops the charges against Carlos Montes, a beloved Chicano activist, before the trial even starts. If the trial does proceed, the jurors will hear many tall tales told to them by the prosecution. What they will see, however, with their own clear eyes is that Carlos Montes' house was raided nearly one year ago at 5am because of FBI political repression due to his years of activism.

Trial of Carlos Montes to begin May 15. Activists say prosecution is political repression. (tags)

Chicano Arts Pioneer Takes On Globalization and War (tags)

Pioneering Chicano artist Malaquias Montoya was present at the creation of the Chicano rights movement in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, being one of the organizers of the Mexican American Liberation Arts Front (MALAF) who helped create the images of that movement. But he’s also involved with current social and political controversies. In his show “Globalization and War: The Aftermath,” through March 4 at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park, he takes on Guantánamo, Abu Ghraib, the U.S. government’s rationalization of torture (“softening them up for interrogation”), the growing gap between rich and poor in the U.S. and throughout the world, and other progressive themes in a bold, assertive and often brutal style derived from 20th century New York artist Ben Shahn and the Mexican muralists Orozco and Siquieros.

WALKOUT - A Critical Review (tags)

Some people have recently called the HBO film, Walkout, as “providing much inspiration to the student walkouts” across America in recent days. Although the film is a historical feature that tells the story of the Chicano people’s struggle against racism and discrimination and is undoubtedly a breakthrough against white supremacy, it is also a telling lesson in the chauvinism of some Chicano activists towards Filipinos in America. This is a case of a majority minority that unconsciously or consciously discriminates against another albeit smaller national minority in advocating for its own self-determination in the United States.

Both Sides of the Border: Latin American and Chicano Art (tags)

With the recent upsurge in popularity for Latino art, Carlotta's Passion Fine Arts intends to present a proper historical and aesthetic context for what is quickly becoming an internationally renown school of art. As an expression of a newly independent hemisphere, Latin American art has long delighted and inspired a world audience. Vibrant, compelling and rooted in the unique experience of the Americas, the genre provides a bridge for a new contemporary US art movement. Chicano Art is the visual language of the Mexican-American community in the US, and domestically it has already made an impact with its bold aesthetics - now it is poised to become popular with the worldwide community. To help broaden that recognition, Carlotta's Passion Fine Arts presents, Both Sides of the Border: Latin American and Chicano Art.
