Progressive FIlipinos Welcomes US Senate Spending Bill (tags)
Progressive Filipino groups from whose ranks most of the victims of extrajudicial killings have come welcomed the action of the United States Senate appropriations committee prohibiting the use of US military aid against Filipino civilians. The U.S Senate in its version of the Foreign Operations Spending Bill it approved last week, the committee instructed the US Secretary of State to monitor US military assistance to the Philippines so that they won’t be “misused by units of the security forces…against civilians, including civilians who are members of political opposition parties and human rights groups.”

Garcia when will Congress pass the equity bill during the Q and A portion of the Forum on Veterans Affair Issue. The forum was held last Monday, April 2 at the American Legion Post 206 in Highland Park, Los Angeles. Congressman Filner also reported “that the appropriations are assured for the equity bill if it passes Congress before the year ends ” because the lower house have passed or earmarked more than $ 13.6 B appropriations for the veterans funding this fiscal year.

Invoking an obscure senate rule Monday, California Senate Appropriations Chair Kevin Murray bumped involuntary psychiatric treatment bill AB 2357 to the Senate Floor, scuttling public input and fast-tracking the bill to its final vote today. Ardently opposed by a coalition of consumers, survivors, ex-patients and allies, the bill seeks to extend "Laura's Law", the state's soon-to-sunset outpatient commitment law.
