Paying More for Being Poor — Bias and Disparity in California’s Traffic Court System (tags)

California's traffic fines and fees are some of the highest in the country, and new data shows that current California policies disproportionately impact people of color. Two bills before the California Legislature (SB 185 https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB185 and AB 412 http://cts.vresp.com/c/?LegalServicesforPris/6211c91da4/TEST/7c77ea8fd3/bill_id=201720180AB412 ) would address many of the disparities.

California Showing No Signs of Economic Recovery (tags)

It is important to note that most of California’s economic woes have less to do with the national recession; California has a leadership problem in Sacramento. Under the leadership of Governor Schwarzenegger, California’s economy has been suffering a continuous decline. Governor Schwarzenegger and the California Legislature have led California into a sea of red ink and have protected special interested groups over the public’s interest.

Heath Insurance Bill Puts Poor at Risk (tags)

I got this in my email. The latest health care law is likely to pass, because progressive health care supporters are split on the issue. Unions are split on it. Political energy for real universal health care is being lost. This bill is similar to the one offered by the governor, but because it's sponsored by Speaker Nunez, the dealmakers have managed to get more liberal support for it. Working class and poor people need to organize to demand protections from the gaps in this bill.

LA School District Not Paying Salaries (tags)

For 11 months now, some 48,000 to 78,000 employees of the Los Angeles School District have not been paid due to computer problems. This is sufficient grounds for a strike, despite the lies of the school district. The school district has breached the labor contract with the teachers and all other school employees and thus all the labor contracts have ended, making a strike legal.

Danny DeVito for Governor: Dump the Evil Twin (tags)

The evidence is overwhelming. Not only has the Evil Twin caused great harm in his first political role, there’s no forecasting the disaster if he gets to star in the sequel. If the voters are committed to having an actor as their governor, they should at least have the right to the performance of a good actor. Californians should dump Schwarzenegger and elect Danny DeVito, as Governor of California. He’s smarter, better looking, and we can understand (and believe) what he says.

Today's OTHER Gay Rights Defeat (tags)

The Murrieta school board voted, 3-2, to reject a proposed policy banning bullying and harassment of students "respect to ethnic group, religion, gender, sexual orientation, color, race, national origin and physical or mental disability or the perception of one or more of such characteristics." Ironically, the real danger here will not actually be borne primarily by the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teenagers who are so despised by these Christian [sic] zealots. There are far, far more black, Latino, Asian, Native, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, Buddhist, Mormon, immigrant, and disabled kids in the Murrieta school district than there are LGBT children, and ALL of those kids are at risk from a school board which is willing to condone harassment as long as some of that harassment is directed at gays.
