POMONA, California - A youthful group of about fifty gathered in downtown Pomona to march, rally, and otherwise lift their voices about the need for immigration reform, social justice, and popular participation in decisionmaking processes. The march was organized and executed exclusively by the youth, who, while accepting the solidarity of more established movement activists, were also taking very seriously their responsibility to lead the movement.

RIVERSIDE - In a demonstration infused with dance, students and workers of the University of California, Riverside demanded an end to fee hikes, staffing furloughs, and cuts in class offerings. They chanted as they marched to downtown Riverside, where they were met by a contingent of student and worker activists from Riverside Community College for another rally. After the speeches, a carefully-orchestrated symbolic "death of public education" and die-in blocked traffic on University Avenue for about five minutes before protesters voluntarily cleared the street and avoided any threat of arrest.

LOS ANGELES - Despite heavy rain, a group of about 30 people attended a demonstration for the freedom of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. The last-minute action was organized by anti-racist activists who were reacting to the overturning of a judgment that favored the condemned journalist. The Third Circuit Court of Appeals had overturned Abu-Jamal's death sentence, finding that the judge in the case had failed to properly instruct members of the jury to consider possible mitigating circumstances during sentencing. However, the Supreme Court overturned the lower court's decision, opening up the possibility that Abu-Jamal, who has always maintained his innocence, could return to death row.

A public viewing will be held in Los Angeles Wednesday for funk legend Rick James, who died in his sleep Friday at his home near Universal City, CA. The viewing will take place from 5-8 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Hollywood Hills. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. "Rick wanted everyone who loved him to be with him at the end and to celebrate his life," said Sujata Murthy, his record label's spokeswoman. As previously reported, an autopsy Saturday found no sign of foul play, but "no obvious sign" of cause of death, coroner's spokesman David Campbell told Associated Press. Coroner's officials are awaiting results of a toxicology test, expected within 10 weeks. According to AP, coroner's officials removed James' body from the mortuary because his death certificate was not signed by a doctor.
