The Filipino American community held prayer meetings and memorial masses for President Cory Aquino on August 4 and 6 in Los Angeles. On Thursday, August 6, the memorial mass was held at the St.Columban Filipino Church in Historic Filipinotwn Los Angeles. It was led by the Echo Park Community Coalition. Veterans of the anti-martial law movement in the United States and in the Philippines were present at the mass. Fr, john Brannnigan, a friend of the Aquino family and Fr, Frisco Entines, a veteran rights advocate officiated the mass. The solemn mass songs in Filipino was sung by the Parish Generation Choir.

The Coalition for A Better Community (CBC) 15-person slate led by former FACLA vice-president Rizalino Manuel that swept the Nov 16-18, 2008 Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) board of directors elections for the year 2009-2001 will meet on Nov. 30 to elects its executive officers. The elections was held and the counting of votes was conducted by a private elections agency hired by FACLA. The counting of vote and the formal declaration of the outcome of the elections was held in FACLA on Nov 16 and 18, 2008. The CBC made a clean sweep of the elections like what they did in 2001 and 2004 under the leadership of De. Jose Baldonado.

Echo Park Lotus Festival 2008, without the Lotus (tags)

The 31st annual Asian Lotus Festival in Echo Park was held without the Lotus last July 11 to 13, 2008. As early as May, people started to notice that the usual lotus bed in the Echo Park Lake was absent from its bed. By June, the city authorities started to worry about the absence of the Lotus flower. And when the Lotus festival was held last July 11-13, 2008 ,the festival has must go on, like how show business does.

Orange County Vigil Opposes Drug War (tags)

On Friday, March 9 a vigil to bring public attention to the failure of current US drug policy was held at Main Beach in Laguna Beach, CA. Organized by the November Coalition, an advocacy group for prisoners of the Drug War and their families, the event was supported by apx 25 participants and was held from 4 to 6 pm. Reaction from passing motorists was enthusiastic, marked by many honks, victory signs, and thumbs up!
