It is unconscionable to hold him for a single day longer.

INT’L JOURNALISTS TO MONITOR MASSACRE CASE PROGRESS (tags)

AJLPP News learned today that Human rights and journalists organizations worldwide lashed out at the Arroyo administration yesterday for creating “a culture of impunity” that led to the massacre of at least 57 persons in Maguindanao province that included 30 journalists. An international delegation of journalists led by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will monitor the progress of the prosecution of those responsible for the carnage which the IFJ called as the biggest single atrocity against journalists in recent history. Amnesty International (AI) said the government must urgently ensure that witnesses are protected and safeguard vital forensic evidence to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. Troop additions meant to suppress protests against Cha-cha (tags)

---The National Democratic Front-Eastern Visayas today belittled the 8th Infantry Division's push for troop additions and said that the real purpose for new soldiers is to suppress the people's protests against charter change or "cha-cha". "It is not credible for Gen. Arthur Tabaquero to say that an additional 600 soldiers will ensure government victory by 2010," said Fr. Santiago Salas, NDF-EV spokesperson. "During the Marcos dictatorship, the New People's Army in Samar alone thrived while fighting against government troops numbering more than twice the present military deployment in the island. The revolutionary movement today is far stronger than it was more than twenty years ago and is fast expanding in Samar and Leyte. The real reason for additional troops is to put down protests against impending charter change and to ensure by armed force that Gloria Arroyo will remain in power beyond 2010. More troops will mean more political killings and other human rights violations."

Urge Louisiana Governor Blanco to Pardon Gary Tyler Now (tags)

Urge Governor Kathleen Blanco to ensure that Tyler gets a new pardon board hearing, and then pardon Tyler before she leaves office in January Gary Tyler, an African-American man, is currently serving a life sentence without chance of parole for the 1974 murder of a 13-year-old white student. Although he was only 16 at the time of the incident, Tyler was charged as an adult in a trial that was seriously flawed. Despite a climate of extreme racial tension in the town of Destrehan, Louisiana, there was no change of venue for the trial. In addition, the jury was all white; members of the black community were deliberately excluded. Tyler's defense attorney did not interview any witnesses, failed to prepare for trial, and spent only one hour with Tyler throughout the entire year previous to the trial. Furthermore, since the trial, key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony.
